Hi everyone

Good to be back online now the pc is fixed.

Over the last few weeks I've had the same recurring message when taking a sharp bend and inducing a bit of body roll. No matter what the speed I kept getting the message "Low oil pressure: Stop" with the familiar warning beep.

I thought this was a typical Stilo technical "glitch" until I thought I'd better check my oil and found it to be just below minimum. Obvioulsy i topped right up but. I've not seen any leaks under the car on the drive way so I'm assuming that it is just burning oil. The car's done 29k and was last serviced in March.

Has anyone else notice the 1.6 engine burning oil in a big way at all?

Cheers

Do you mean it's 9 months since you checked your oil?

Get into the habit of checking your oil on a weekly basis, don't just rely on the warning lights. Wrecked engine if the warning doesn't come on.

My 1.6 hasn't used any oil in 2k miles so they're not oil burners

I had this "problem" (oil consumption) from the begining. I went to 4 different FIAT dealers and they all told me that is natural... That usually happened during summer and during periods that the acc pedal was on the floor 9 of 10 times.. :D

*facts before I installed the turbo kit.

Had the same problem with a 2.0 Marea hire car couple of years ago:( Did about 1200 miles in two weeks and had the oil warning light come on - sod all oil in the system after 900 miles and I promise I wasn't "booting it" too much;) No, really I wasn't!!
Car had done 3.5k miles when I got it. Anyway, chucked in some Selenia oil I had kicking around for my much missed Lancia and it was fine, stayed at full until I gave the car back(y)
It's not uncommon for an engine to use a smidgen of oil, especially if you "clip on" a bit :D So is the oil holding at the level you topped it up to or is still vanishing(n)
That would seem to be the key to me..... if it's still going "missing" things might be "amiss":(

Today I got the Engine Fault message and whereas before when it went away now it won't :(. The care runs OK with no obvious performance loss but the message just won't go out. I think i might need to take it the dealer to have the examiner check it out.

just an update on the engine fault. Got the car hooked up to the examiner for the fault messages - £66 :( they found the fault codes but couldn't find a problem with the car. They cleared the fault and updated the ECU software and I was on my way.

on one hand I'm happy there was no real fault found but a bit perplexed as to what is causing these fault codes.

I've had

1). The persistent fuel level sensor fault

2). Low oil presssure a fair bit

3). Engine failure a few times (the last time it wouldn't clear on restart).

Hopefully the software update will cure things longer term.

I have a 1.8 liters engine and my oil consumption was 2,7 liters after 13 000km...

What oil do you use? I'm using Quaker State 5w40.

got 5w 40 fully syn in mine, when your ment to have 10w 40 fully syn, so the engine is thining it quite alot hense why im loosing so much after 1200 miles!!

Just been and checked the bottle in the boot... it is indeed 10W40 - Texaco Havoline Extra and was left in the car to top oil up with by FIAT dealer when I got the car back after 36K service.

Ive got oil loss! comes up "low oil pressure stop engine", now before this i was told to ignore these warnings as they are a common fault in stilos, ive reported the oil loss to the dealers and they have topped the oil up for me and they are running a series of tests on how much the oil is dropping and then sending it back to fiat for a report, i only noticed there was no oil when the engine started tapping! not happy as it could score my engine and cause damage

Im getting both, a conciderable amount of oil loss like 5 ltrs every 800 miles and always have the "low oil pressure" warning come up! hmmmmmm

Didn't you have head gasket and gearbox problems wih this one?

Any "mechanic" that says ignore low oil pressure warnings should be garotted, left to die and buried vertically, head down.

You have obviously serious oil loss and it needs to be investigated yesterday

If there's no visible external oil leak then you have a significant internal oil leak causing your lack of oil pressure and that shouldn't be on anyone's "to be ignored" list

I did indeed, Head Gasket went at 18,000 miles, and gearbox....well dont even get me started lol! yeah this car has had a number of faults that i have fought hard with fiat uk but with no luck, they either forget about you or blame the fault on some totally random reason last one they even blamed the angle of the drivers seat as a cause!! :bang: but yes Eric Ashmole Fiat dealers in Swansea have told me to ignore any faults that come up on the display which ive learnt is the worst thing i can do, the latest problem with my car is:-

Loss of oil (burning)
Misfiring at 4000rpm +

Im just worried my engine is going to fail :( is there anything that i can do to check myself what the possible cause might be? or shall i leave it to fiat because at the moment i have no faith in my dealers whatsoever. Can you blame me? lol

No I don't blame you at all.

You say loss of oil (burning). The oil has to be going somewhere and this is the first time you've mentioned "burning" so are you leaving smokescreens? At least that would explain the oil consumption which is narrowing down the possibilities from just a plain oil leak

Oil burning is oil in the combustion of course which is piston rings, cylinder bore wear and possible head gasket if you have misfires too.

Compression tests on the cylinders could be the first cheap port of call. Any garage can do that for you

But low oil pressure (provided you have oil in it) is different from losing or burning oil. That's more like worn big ends and internal leaks. Is the low oil pressure warning just coming up when the oil level is low?

i mite give that a go! I have noticed a serious amount of "popping" from the exhaust when i change gear and even if i tap the accellerator. The exhaust hasnt blown but recently the exhaust has gone very loud! and "popping" like a subaru lol. Whats the causes of popping from the exhaust?
