You would need to change the complete heater. The basic version is operated by metal cables, the climate control version is operated electronically with various electric motors.
Yeah you can do it, to add on what Davren has said - you will also need the temperature sensor for the middle of the dash up at the windscreen. Also as it is electricly controlled you will need the correct dashboard wiring loom to connect it up, but it is all plug and play.
I've retrofitted the digital climate control along with the connect nav and cruise control into my 1.2 Active. Straight swap so it was, with the correct wiring loom.
