Good morning all,
Want to ask about a problem with my Stilo that seems to be happening more and more often. Doesn't seem to be any problem with the drive of the car, recently passed it's MOT. But for some reason, when you're coming to a stop and you clutch in, the engine stalls. This doesn't happen all the time and never happens if the air conditioning is on.

It also kangaroo's if you're moving along in slow traffic. Slight touch on the throttle, revs go up, then come back down to almost stall and the car lurches forward. But again, air conditioning on, and it's MUCH smoother.

Things done so far
  • Throttle relearn sometime this afternoon
  • MAP sensor cleaned last week
  • Throttle body cleaned

Thanks in advance guys,(y)

Hi, what engine is it?

Makes sense to check fuel filter if it's a diesel, if it's a petrol and already checked everything then I guess you could try to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes or so just to reset the ecu.

Does it make any difference when driving in the cold or hot weather?

its a 1.6
im wondering james have you changed your air filter? if thats clogged it will reduce the air flow to the engine.
my 1.6 done this as well from new - fiat dealer couldnt find a problem until a throttle body update was done at the dealers.
give the throttle body another clean you could have rubbish got back in there from all the work you have had done since you last cleaned it, for a 5 min job its worth the check.

i think its the second post that decks talks about the update, sound very similar to yours and i suspect its the same problem. Our 1.6 has got the update in the service history yours may have escaped it for some strange reason (or previous owner couldnt be bothered!!)

Hi guys,
My stilo was rough driving at low revs and would stall sometimes with air con off when revs dropped after pushing clutch down.

Spent a bit of time on it today and hurray, it's fixed!! Throttle relearn sorted the problem, now MUCH smoother driving in traffic and now doesn't stall. :)

Thanks Roy (y)

Hi,I had the same thing on my friend's Punto mk2 1.2 16v with ac. I found that there was a crack in the air hose between the air filter and throttle body. I changed that hose, cleaned the throttle body and replaced the plugs and the car drove fine. Even in my case, no errors were logged.

Good luck!

Hesitation/jumping/stalling on Coast it's one of the sensors. Unplugging one at a time eg. MAF, Lambda etc will force ECu to revert to a predefined map.

Unplug the Lambda = idle change, (forced it to do saved map) then its not that,

Unplug Maf = no change, then that's failed and the ecu is ignoring it anyway and running preinstalled fail maps.

Euro car parts don't want you to buy the sensors, install them to diagnose what's wrong/better and then return them 'unused' till you find the working one.

Its normally the MAF, my bravo ate them twice a year.

Its a 1.6 not a diesel so it wont be a MAF

Good morning all,
Well I thought throttle relearn had sorted it, certainly made it a little better, but still doing the same thing. I will have a go at unplugging sensors etc tonight (if it's not raining) :)

Hi guys,
Unplugged MAP sensor, engine light on and idled worse. Cleared the error and then unplugged pre-cat lambda sensor. No change at all in engine tone. Does it matter that the engine was cold? Also, no error showed when it was disconnected?

So confused! Thanks again for your help

Not long services, plugs are still new, coil packs tested and work fine, injectors were sorted out a short while ago by a fiat specialist, no doubt they're fine too, also showing no errors.

I'll have a tinker one day and see if I find something. Thanks for your help guys, I realise these 1.6 blocks are not the easiest engines to diagnose even with a FES :D

Hi all,
Just to update on this. Problem has been solved!!!

Thanks to Most Easterly Pandas, he said there was a mention before of this problem and the air con sensor was disconnected to solve it. So I tried it and in traffic, it drives like a different car with air con off lol!!! Smooth and easy at low speeds. Except air con doesn't work ... Lol

Many thanks :)
