Excuse my attempt to describe the issue as im not too mechanically minded o:).

When in any gear and putting the gas peddle to the floor the engine over revs.

When it should be pulling up a hill it slows right down and struggles whilst over revving. Whist on the motorway in 5th gear the car will struggle to get to 75mph whilst revving at around 5000 revs then if you try accelerate there will be hardly no power increase, the rev counter will just go up.

There is a slight incline as I get to my house, the car would only get to around 5-10mph whilst the rev counter was going nuts.

The gears change normally and the clutch pedal feels just like it did for the past few month (I think).

There are no error messages being displayed.

Any idea on what the problem could be? how to fix it? and if its being done by a garage how much it would cost?

Thanks.

Sorry to say this, but it sounds very much like a really bad slipping/worn clutch that needs replacing.

What model & engine is it, how many miiles has it done & do you know if the clutch has ever been changed, and are there any signs of oil leakage/drips (perhaps oil stains on the ground when parked) from around/behind the passenger side front wheel ???

Also, has this happened "suddenly" ... or has it "just kinda got worse over a lengthyish period of time"?

Thanks for your reply.

Hmm, my dad said the same. Just attempted a 30mile journey for work and after about 800meteres I decided it wasnt to be.

Its a 1.6 dynamic.

I havent noticed any signs of leakage, had the car since June 2010, looking at the history supplied with the car and theres a receiopt for the clutch assembly dated September 2009, with 77425 on the clock.

Since I have had it its travelled about 12000 miles and now has a reading of about 95000.

Theres seemed to have been something tgere for the past week, the gears slipping on the odd occasion, dip the clutch and it would go. But nothing like it is now, yesterday I managed to drive about 70mikes with no problem, the last 30 home were terrible, as I say it was struggling to to speed and over revving like mad.

It certainly sounds like a clutch issue with it not getting engaged properly. It could be simply worn out but 20k miles since having a new clutch assembly is nothing at all so there might be a slim possibility that the clutch isn't being allowed to fully engage because you say "dip the clutch and it would go" and that won't happen with a worn out clutch

Is the pedal getting fully up?
Check if there is anything interfering like the above the pedals sound deadening panel. Put your foot underneath clutch pedal and see if you can drag it up further.

See where mine was interfering here? If it is then pull the damned thing off and throw it away

Then there's the hydraulics. This should allow pedal height self adjusting but relies on the pedal getting fully back up so I'd try a quick bleed from the clutch slave cylinder

Have a look in the Stilo Guides for how to bleed the clutch slave cylinder

PS Of course, if you drive around with your foot pressing on the clutch then you need to break the habit before it breaks the bank as that will burn out a clutch very quickly

Thanks for the reply, had a proper look at it today and theres definitely something going on with the clutch. Read somewhere a little test to carry out, basically put it into fourth then slowly release the clutch pedal to see if it would stall, not the case, as I said clutch pedal bounces back as it should, the gears change as they should, theres just no power behind it.

Time to go find the cheapest mechanic.

Had the clutch done, now the car wont start, grr.

My dade came and looked at it Sunday, removed the top cover on the engine block, and some pipes to allow us to clearly see the above, it started acfter nust to move the car up the drive abou 1meter. Yesterday it eouldnt start, any ideas?

Your car prefers older drivers?:)

Sorry, couldn't resist. You'd need to provide a lot more information other than car won't start, moved something, now it does, what do you think is wrong?

Its has been no problem since I have had it. Occasionally would'nt start but I put that down to the fact it was low on fuel and how it was parked, as it would start once in motion.

Other then the clutch problem it was running fine up until sunday, the parts that were taken off were left off when it was started to move it forward. Would this have anything to do with it?
