Technical Problem getting Fiat part

I was using halford's wind back tool, and works absolutely fine.

Might be so for one side but not for both because they wind in on different rotations..:) ask Argo where he got his he didnt have any problems but that was some time back..

My dealer will not order the Fiat rear caliper piston wind back tool (part number 1 870 866 000). Does anyone know a dealer who will supply this part and post it out?

Why not? When I managed to order it (which I found amazing) anyone can order it. You must have a cocky dealer that want the job for themselves.

You've got the wrong number by the way. It's 18700886000. At least on my "Ricambi Originali" cardboard box with the tool inside. Perhaps that's the problem.

Simonstone are not now providing this tool. Found this out after making enquiries today. Anyone who has one is rather lucky because they seem to be impossible to get hold of now. I see Sealey make a left and right hand version of a wind back tool at about £17 each. Has anyone used them?

I have the full kit and the only drawback I can see with getting a single one is the fact that they might supply you with the wrong size plate to fit the caliper piston.. you will have to go chasing around to get some to fit..costing you more cash in the long run and time wasted..:(

Indeed PNL. This is giving me a real dilemma. I don't want to spend a huge amount on tools I'll only use once in a blue moon so this is driving me either to the G clamp or the garage to get the work done. Interestingly my dealer doesn't use the special tool; they told me they use a G clamp and something to turn the piston at the same time. They did however know that the pistons have different direction threads!

I didn't have any problems using a universal "magic cube" available from any car accessory shop

But where people go wrong is trying to do it like this. That's no good at all as you need to be able to push nice and steady and keep it square and turn at the same time

Trick is to remove rear disc, only takes 2 minutes provided it's not rusted on (mine just tapped off no problems) -worth considering replacing the discs anyway whilst they're off, they're not expensive

But then, with the disc removed, bolt the caliper back in

rear brake 3.JPG
Now you have something solid you can push against. Do a quarter turn at at a time, in the same direction as forward wheel rotation and allow the fluid to escape at the rear. Back up now and again if you feel resistance to keep everything moving nicely

rear brake 1a.JPG
Remember to clamp the brake hose with a soft jawed clamp and release the bleed nipple and the excess contaminated fluid then just dumps out the back rather than going back up into the brake system

rear brake 4.JPG
Measure the width of the disc and the two pads combined and you'll know how much you have to push the piston back in

rear brake 5.JPG
And there you go, just take it steady and allow the fluid to escape as it's quite a pressure you're building up there.
Read through the procedure for rear pads replacement as regards slackening off handbrake first and ratcheting up the pads afterwards

Just a quick update on the Fiat part availability. Three dealers have now refused to order the brake piston wind back tool. As soon as they found out it was a Fiat workshop tool they said it couldn't be ordered. I would expect Forum members to get the same response from other dealers if they tried to order one. If anyone made the tool I am sure they would have plenty of takers among Forum members, and not just Stilo owners.

Ha !!! fiat closing ranks then ..tipical..no consolation to you tho..:( if you lived nearer I would willingly loan you my kit..but you half way round the world from me.. ;) maybe time to get the cube which are available at many outlets or ask Decks to sell you his fiat tool as he now it would seem uses a cube..:)

Never had one.:)
Fiat design always looked too flimsy to me, perhaps that's why they've withdrawn it. I thought about making a better one but then worked out a better method altogether for a totally controlled push and turn at the same time, as described above

I looked at that kit a while ago Phil. Coudn't be sure that it had a suitable disc for the Fiat calliper so I e-mailed the seller to ask and didn't get a reply.

Same seller also has them on auction starting at £20 if anyone wants to chance it fitting.

Its the one I have Dave..of course I paid £47+ postage a few years ago for mine which at the time was a good buy..to date I have used it on fiat/alfa Mitsi/vauxhall and Kia..works a treat I can tell ya..(y)

Too late now Phil, I did mine with the angle grinder "C" spanner. Maybe next time......... Ahh no, rear pads seem to last 75,000 miles so hopefully there won't be a next time. ;)
