Hi all, I am brand new to this and this is my first posting so be gentle.

I have an 04 JTD Stilo and I am having problems with the heater system. When I turn the fans on (hot or cold) I get a smell of fumes coming into the cabin. But if I put the Air Con on there is no smell..

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation Mark

Well, is it fumes or just a smelly cabin filter that needs changing? An old cabin filter doesn't smell so bad with air con on.

If it really is engine fumes then aircon on/off shouldn't make any difference

aqs would prevent the fumes if its fitted, does the car have climate control with the aqs package?. this will make the system recirc if there is bad air coming in from the outside (mine does this all the time especially when behind a dirty london bus).

as for fumes getting into the cabin this is a problem, annd most likely caused by the exhaust system, get the thing checked out - it maybe something like a lose union on the exhaust - to a cracked manifold / cat or flex joint blowing. either way you have to get that sorted for safteys sake.

Hello Mark,
My JTD Multiwagon is doing this as well, did you find the source? I don't think it is from the exhaust, more of an oily smell.
Yes, putting the heater into re-circ mode stops the fumes entering the cabin but it doesn't cure the problem, which has only just started happening. I leave the fan on a low speed at all times - therefore I know that this is a recent development. Have checked all the induction pipework and that is secure and not damaged. I blocked the exhaust outlet and checked for leaks but nothing.
