Technical can this cause a blown exhaust??

just got my car back today, had cam belt, variator, water pump, aux belt, tensioners and pulley done.

its a 1.8 dynamic 02 plate stilo.

but i noticed that it now sounds like i have a blown exhaust???

is this purely coincidental? or is there any way that the time in garage could have done it??
shall i got back to them with it?

it drives fantastically, pulls really well, and goes like new, just nasty sound of blown exhaust.....

well.. if its post cat - it wont affect performance.. and should be fairly cheap to fix - see if you can spot it (or have it looked at)

Check at the flexi joint betya thats where it will be blowing from..(y)

are you sure it's not just louder (more like an old diesel?) - if not - record it and post here

its busted from flexy.....they didnt test drive it!!! i was waiting for them to finish and watching and being nosey lolol, i had to go to work as soon as they finished it!

how do i fix this??? does it need new exahust from flexy back :S or is there a cheaper way.....

Thought so weakest point in the stilo exhaust system and as always they will tell you." Sorry sir its a new exhaust section you need " but you can get a flexi section alone to replace the buggered bit..its really all down to how good you are at fixing things and if you have the tools and a place to get the car up in the air for you to shimmy on under..search button will reveal some thread on the subject already if you do a quick one..(y)

There you go

The 1.6 is one and three quarters of an inch in dia at that point but not to sure if the 1.8 is also the same..to make the job easier I would drop that section off the car anyway when you come to do it ..and when you have it off you can always measure it..or even measure it before you drop it off..which ever suites you really..:p

Mmmm now their a handy tool..:chin: ;)

PS.. thanks for the link I been looking for that one again for ages after losing it out me favourits.. (y)

lol, i may buy a pair...ive been eying some up in maplins.....
not a problem, found it whilst trawling, also found a link to a working eper in another of your posts!!

how hard is it to take the exhaust off?? i cant get it in the air, but i can get it high enough to work on it on my back. and will i be needing new nuts and bolts for when i separate it from down pipe? ie are they gonna be corroded and rusted on, needing to be cut off and banged out.....
thanks!!!

You will need to get the car a fair way up into the air to make working under there easy and tolerable..bolts are going to be rusty that's for sure but a little heat and releasing fluid usually does the trick....:)

Thankyou Stu for fixing the eper view for me which went down in post 4..replacing it with the elearn one I sent you..Cheers..

OK, got my new flexi section, for those of you that want to know, for a 1.8 its 55mm ext dia, and 200mm long.

but another problem, i need to take the exhaust off from the just before the flexi all the way back, to work on it in garden, (cant quite fit an angle grinder int here to cut old flexi off) soooo, i need to undo the bolts on the flange that join mid section to down pipe, but, the bolts seem to have had them selves welded on!!!! WTF?!? what do i do?? i have most tools, including a variety of rotary grinding tools......(this is going to be done on Thursday, so need to find a solution before then, so speed is of the essence :)
many thanks!!!

Righty oh here we go :)..on eper it looks as tho their not bolts but studs with a nut..either way you still need to remove the nuts :bang: ..so 1st try heat and release fluid [WD40 or Plusgas ]..or a nut splitter..and if they dont do the trick its going to be a brute force jobby and grit your teeth time which will no doubt sheer the nuts off.. then you will have to remove the studs in the exhaust section your removing from the car with a stud remover and you could replace them with bolts ;) ..if you cant find bolts with the appropriate thread then drill out the flange to take a new nut and bolt.. if there is a gasket in place dont forget to replace it with a new one ..also pick up some exhaust sealant I'm sure you will find a use for that as well..:)

ahh ha, so on one side it "looks" welded, because it is lol, a stud, and on the other side should be a nut, yeh, rusted nuts, i can do them, secret is cocacola!!! then shoc n unlock spray leave it and then try it. if not ill grind the bugger off and drill it out.....then new SS bolts and nuts....ill also need some exhust clamps, because im not welding the new section on, dont have a welder, will be exhaust sealer and clamps job.
ill give it a bash on thursday!! ill do it becaus i have no choice i NEEED my car, and its sounding REALY loud and poppy now, definatley illegal noise :(

live long and prosper

Always thought there was summat funny about your ears..:chin:

And @ mzhussain..jack the car up from the front and from the rear so the car tilts over to the side but obviously not fall over onto its side..:p work methodically ..keep your cool [hard in the weather I know] if your using power tools keep safe and all clothing and body parts out of the way..;) once the exhaust section is off it will be plain sailing ..just make sure you measure up correctly how much of the old you need to cut out so it ends up the same length as the original  ..[sure I didnt need to tell you that one ] but I did just in case..(y)

Good luck..:)

alll done :) took 5 hours!!! had to wrestle with rounded and welded bolts....
angle grinder was my best friend today, my right arm is probably part mild steel by now lol
but all done!!! and sounds normal again, hopefully thisll hold out.....

Result well done..(y)

sigh not happy.....went to slough yesterday, was fiiine, today drove to shops, gave it some welly (as you do with he 1.8 :D ) and "BANG" goes the exhaust, the exhaust clamp snapped, and one of the joins ripped apart destroying the exhaust....gonna put it back on tomorrow with another clamp....and hope it don't happen again, if it goes again ill take it and get it welded :( shouldn't cost much cos Ive done the hard work and put it on!
