This mechanic obviously didnt drive the car afterwards otherwise he would have experienced what you did. Could be earths or valve timing although timing would have to be way out to cause this. Really needs to be checked through thoroughly by someone who knows what they are doing.

That is so crap on so many levels that I would demand your money back for the time and inconvenience caused through basic incompetence and obviously not checking the work in the slightest. Anyone as bad as this could have caused SEVERE engine damage to your car and shouldn't be allowed to continue without retraining
Crikey people on here have done their own cambelt changes, with all the risks that entails, but they managed it through finding out how to do it, taking care and checking their work. Obviously this person didn't do any of that

I know this is of no help but Fiat Canterbury do a fixed price(well did when i had mine done) and was cheaper than most independent dealers,was around £250
