Hello chaps,

I need your advice.... I have had my Stilo Multiwagon 1.9 JTD for around 6 months now and on the whole I'm very happy with it. However over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a marked increase in fuel consumption (particularly around town) and the car is smoking quite a lot (particularly when accelerating...).
The car is a 54 plate with a meagre 36k on the clock. I've had a quick nose under the bonnet and noticed what looked like some slight weeping of fuel around the diesel filter and I have tightened this (by hand..).
Where should I be looking for the likely culprit? MAF, EGR valve....? I've got no warning lights or messages so I'm a little puzzled. I generally use BP 'standard' diesel if its likely to make a difference....
Lastly, where is the OBD plug on these cars....?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

OBD Plug is by the fuses in the compartment to the right of the steering columb.

If in doubt, have the fuel filter changed. Bung through some injector cleaner (redex for example) and see how she goes.......

When was it last serviced:confused:

have you considered especially around town at this time of year, with it being alot colder my mpg has dropped from 42, to around 37/38mpg due to the car taking longer to get upto temperature! also my longer journey mpg has dropped from 50+ to a mere late 40's! and i would also say that the smoke is alot more noticable especially in diesel when cold at this time as its the exhaust gases evaporating in the air... ie like when you blow in the air and you can see it in the winter/cold air!

though alot of smoke can mean a turbo is on the way out, and that would also affect you mpg! But i would bet on the above! As expressed a new fuel filter and some redex wouldnt go a miss

Diesels normally operate better with cold air as the intercooler works even better although as suggested the rest of the engine takes longer to get up to best temperature so one can balance out the other on shorter journeys or in traffic.

It is a chance the turbo is about to go(surprising at only 36k miles) as I also have a Land Rover which was throwing out lots of whitish smoke on start up. Today I fired it up and it became greyer smoke then a loud rattle as the vanes broke off the turbo! So might be worth having a listen to the turbo to see if bearings are sounding a bit the worse for wear.

Hope it works out

John

Bloody hell! Getting a bit pessimistic aren't we

The OP has already posted the most likely cause.

MAP sensor can be checked in only minutes.

After that, try blocking the EGR.

Finally be aware of possible splits in intercooler pipework (you'd normally hear this anyway)
