Hello everyone!

I am form Romania and I have a Fiat Stilo 1.6l 16v 103hp from 2001 and I have a big problem with it. I hope that you, from your knowledge and experience will give me some advices, ideas or even solutions to it.

Symptoms: the engine does not rev up! It revs only to about 2000 revs/min. when cold and to about 2500 revs/min. when hot, but it has no power at all. It has a strange idling at about 1250 revs/min. with short shakings at every 4 seconds. This problem appeared suddenly, while driving the car at 80-90 km/h. Not a sign before. The engine starts normally. I cannot use my car... it moves only at idle speed, very slow, just using the clutch, it doesn’t go uphill at all...

Till now I visited several mechanics and made several ECU tests. Most of the mechanics (generalists) suggested that the problem can be hidden in bad wiring or the throttle body doesn’t operate (because most of the errors of the ECU tests indicated that) or the acceleration pedal’s sensor is broken. Some mechanics checked some other sensors – no results... they told me that the ignition coils are functioning, the injectors are clean and operating, the sparkplugs are ok, the fuel pressure is ok and so on.
Now: the local Fiat dealer told me something else. He thinks that the ECU or the injection computer is fried... and wants me to buy another one. I asked him to reinstall the software but he told me that the software version I have is the latest one and cannot reinstall it... the thing is that I don’t trust this dealer at all because he is a Fiat “specialist” only for one month, before that being a Renault dealer. Even more: my Stilo was the first one that visited his workshop... Even more: I called other Fiat dealers with more experience (from other towns) and they told me to run from that dealer... imagine!

I simply cannot afford to buy all those parts... they are very expensive... I’d prefer to limit my expenses as much as possible...

If you encountered this symptoms before and know the solution or have any ideas what is there to be done, please help me and write here. I am so desperate that any helping hand would be good for me.

I hope my English is good enough for you to understand exactly my problem...

Thank you!
Octa

hello octa.... firstly im no expert on these things and im sure some of the more experienced people on here can point you in the right direction, but i was having the very same problems as yourself and it turned to to be the EGR valve it was stuck opened and needed cleaned, that sorted my problem out but as ive said im sure if im wrong someone on here with more experience can point you in the right direction.

You don't have a EGR valve on the 1.6, thanks heavens

You have throttle body communications problems and your car is in "safe mode" and won't allow rpm above 2500rpm to avoid damage.

Do a search on "throttle body" here for some clues.

It's difficult to know exactly where the communications problem will be but i'd start by cleaning the throttle body valve (See Stilo Guides up above) and clean up the throttle body electrical connector with electrical contact cleaner, reset the ECU, do a throttle relearn procedure and see what happens

Thank you all for posting here!

I’ll try to contact Mr. Milian Popescu. Maybe he has some answers to my problem...

Anyhow, if you have some other opinions and ideas regarding my Stilo’s problem please don’t hesitate to write here!

Thank you!

I would listen to Deck Chair he really knows his stuff but as another suggestion check the Lambda sensor they always seem to go on Fiats.
