i got new front disks and breaks on my 3dr stilo 1.2 16v about a month ago now and to begin with they were squeeling a bit when reversing and going round corners, i thought it might just be the breaks bedding in or something but its going on too long now. it does it more when turning left as i guess i dont turn that way as much.

any help or advice appriciated.

Put a thin film of Coppaslip or similar on the back of each front BRAKE pad each side of the car but dont get it on the braking surface or discs! Try that mate. Some BRAKE pads do squeel (like standard GPS pads and need a modified squeel supression kit fitted) so pads may be the issue if they are FIAT pads? P.S. I fitted Half**ds pads to my last car, brake efficiency was excellent, no squeeling and they shed NO BLACK DUST AT ALL!!

Kidding - :D Coppaslip is usually the answer, but I'm with Argo..... take it back if you paid for it to be done and whinge like buggery. Usually works (y)
 
well thats part of the problem, an engineer at work did it. i'll have a word.
 
My breaks squeal like pigs.

Bought Mintex discs and pads. Stop me in half the distance of the OEM ones, so I don't really care. Besides, I get a sick minded sense of satisfaction when I see people putting their hands over their ears and gritting their teeth ;)
 
Bought a set of Mintex pads and discs of an ebay shop for £62.90 inc. delivery in February. Thought that was pretty good compared to OEM price. Company was MNC Automotive in Manchester. They still squeal but I'm not too bothered, with the squealing brakes and diesel engine people think I'm a taxi and get out of the way:D
 
for all the squealing, they're really good pads for the price!
 
mine squeek when going slow and reversing. the car only 3months old. took it to fiat and they said. theres dust in the brakes. and to clean them out it will be £97 + VAT, i said, the squeeks annoying, but not that annoying!
 
yeah, like a whore - i even dipped them in copper grease recently, but nothing
 
In this post I can see a common factor and that is the use of the mintex pads ..these pads are well know to have a hard compound and thats the reason for the squealing ..next time around just change the pads to one that has a softer compound and that should cure the problem :)
 
I thought Mintex were matched to the discs. If you went for a softer pad, surely you would reduce the life of your disc.

Then again, I could be way off. I just bought them because they perform and they are a fantastic price. Mintex used to sponsor the RAC rally. All the great rally cars used them. Thats where I first heard of them and I must say (apart from the screech) they perform very well. I wasn't eapecting that sort of performance on such a heavy car.
 
Do the Mintex pads come with any form of backing pad?

Having plastic padding (or whatever it is) fitted to the rear of the pads seems essential to reduce squeal (and even then it may not stop it completely).

Mintex are well known to have a hard compound and by using a softer compound pad the disk will last longer and NOT shorten its life ..gone are the days it would seem the manufacturers add shimming to brake pads which to be honest I think its a step backwards as they kept the pad from getting in contact with the caliper as do the rubber backing pads on EBC green and red stuff pads ..it was a simple matter then to copper grease the shims as you fitted them in and very rarely did you suffer brake squeal afterwards ..it seems to me that the motor trade is going backward in many ways despite all the so called technological advances they keep telling us about ..
