On a couple of other forums there is a "Car of the month" where people enter their cars into a thread using one or 2 of the best pictures and then after a certain amount of time say a week there's a poll that goes up where people can vote for the car they like the most.
and to give everyone a fair chance of winning you can only enter your car every 2-3 months. Maybe have a banner as a prize just for the month that you have won for then it gets given to the person who wins next month
What do people think to this?

Wow

All that effort lovingly valeting the vehicle, cleaning it, polishing it, maybe even fitting those new alloys youve just bought, or finally spraying that bodykit up and fitting it

Blood, sweat and tears spent making it look lovely.......FOR A RIBBON ON YOUR PROFILE THAT YOU MIGHT NOT WIN ANYWAY OR MAYBE A LINK!!!

That is what you are up against - people arent going to be interested or put the effort in for something as little as that

The only way this will seriously take off is there is a cash prize and im afraid no one is willing to do that, Ben wont be interested in stumping up £ x amount every month and theres no way forum members are going to donate to a cash pot and let someone else take it

you might have maybe a month or twos interest due to its newness but then it will die a slow and painful death

Well it seems to work on other forums without any prize at all and just a picture of their car on a title page. I dont see why there would have to be a cash prize if its just for fun? I personally wouldnt spend hours detailing my car just to enter it into the competition but thats upto whoever wants to enter. I just dont see why this wont work tbh but thats your opinion on it and if you dont see it working, then fair enough.

That qoute sums up the problems with it

If you arent going to take it seriously, then why should everyone else?

People will enter any old pieces of crap - dirty cars, crashed cars, anything, they might even just go onto google and copy an image and enter it when it isnt even their car

And what if it won? I dont know about you, but i certainly wouldnt be happy if i had got a really nice pic of my nice clean car and was beaten by someone who couldnt be bothered that could possibly also have been voted up by my friends who ive told in secret to 'sign up and vote for my car'

How horribly wrong! You need to get some motivation if you'll do something YOU ENJOY for money only!

As said, it works well on many other forums, hopefully people here could co-operate. I know I certainly could!

^and the friends signing up thing is easily solved by doing it all in a seperate forum - 30 posts and 3 months needed before you can see it...

But as well as 'newbies' you are taking away a proportion of the forum members who can participate and may wish to participate, perhaps even alienating them from future participation once meeting criteria

Alright then I will put it to you this way

One of you who is serious offer up a cash prize out of your own pocket and see how many people take an interest

Then offer an alteranative offering - a banner in your profile for a month, see how many take an interest in that

Or offer a cash prize then the following month a banner and no cash prize then see what happens

I bet i know which one will get the most interest

Then if somehow its proved that people were interested in the banner then you can tell me people arent interested or motivated by money

I think the idea could be tweaked a bit.

How about picture of the week (car related otherwise some smart gimp will just post their bird in the nip and get the votes lol)

Seeing great pictures of members cars should draw new members in & besides this site needs more galleries, progress threads rather than essay posts about problems

I think it is a very good idea and having a different criteria each month gives everyone more of a far chance. What about doing a 50p charge to enter and it gives you one/ two votes. This way what money is made from the entries can be given to the winner and therefore more people will want to enter for a cash prize??

you dont need a super clean car to get a good picture so you wouldnt have to spend hours of labour for a banner....
and obviously something with a cash prize would get more intrest but that takes it away from the realms of friendly competition and people get serious. where as a bit of friendly competition is always good fun and when people see others having a good time with it they will join in and the community that actually 'competes' will grow and get better.

think we should just try it out for a month or so. if its not a hit with the forum take it down. end of, no big deal.

I dont see what money has to do with this at all. Its a bit of friendly competition. Money makes it stupid imo, people will get annoyed if they enter each month and enter whatever amount and then never win. So the prize should be a ribbon under your name and maybe a link and the picture you entered for your members motor thread and thats it. This should not involve money. If people dont want to enter because it has no cash prize then thats their choice but i would certainly enter if it doesnt have a cash prize.
I think if we got a trial of this going for maybe 3 months or so then did it properly just to work out any bugs there may be that would be a good idea, and if it doesnt work then fair enough, at least its been tried.

You need to read up on Herzberg.

Money is not a motivational factor. It's a theory which is proven over and over again - recognised employees are more efficient than over paid employees. Once you understand this, come back and tell us we need cash to make people want to do stuff.

So is it a theory or fact then??

Went over this crap at uni, Belbin etc, the whole lot is almost as bad as religion!

I would take a look at the bloke on wiki but i have better things to do with my time

Besides Im not interested in theories, i want facts/hard evidence and my suggestion would prove that one way or another

But we will see but it has been 4 days and i dont see any car of the month or any main mods commenting in its favour, just like last time
