Brilliant suggestion this.

This forum is the first I have ever used (and I use a lot) to have a system where only local images can be posted. I have a few complaints about the system.

1. It's not 'easy' to upload images. As a noob, first thing I wanted to do it shove up some pics of my car. On any other forum, I'd go to my image hoster, upload the image, and shove the code in. Done. Here, I had to actually research how to upload images. It is not intuitive at all.
2. Why the hell do you let us embed images that are not locally hosted. - If you hate it so much, put in a script that blocks them.
3. Better still, actually integrate a local image uploader into this reply box. Instead of when you click image it coming up with an "enter url", get it to allow you to upload them.
4. If you insist on making us host them here, why do such low quality? You have recognised the need to remove dead links to images, but you replace them with poor low quality ones. It's tight. You have a lot of donations, spend a little and get some proper bandwidth.
5. If you absolutely insist on making them be local, then do it for the first post in the members motors, not all of them.
6. If you think this system is so much better, sort it out. Since i've been on here (less than a week) I've had three periods of large downtime, and heavy traffic constantly. I can guarantee my image hoster has better uptime - never, ever ever seen it go down, and am sure it will stay that way.
7. On the list of important rules, this just is not one of them. Dead links are a bitch, fine, get a bot to run around deleting threads with dead images. It saves your mods PMing everyone to tell them, then having to replace links in threads. Come on, it's slow and stupid. You're wasting your time. Get a bot to do the job for you.

To sum up, I dislike the image rules. You won't agree. I await your response, and, please, respect my views.

Na... just appeared for me. That's quite handy. Shame about the quality issues though.

Guess i'll just have to live with it. Can a mod reopen my thread in the members motors, remove the offending images if you desire.
What quality issues? The uploaded images aren't changed.

There are 2 smaller versions created, but they will always link back to the original if you go through the gallery.

this isnt an idea, its a rant, but thats not saying i dont agree, its a bull **** rule but this is a strict forum , if you do somthing or saying somthing to offended someone you dont even get warned you just get banned for 24 hours like i did, just keep your head down n ignore the dumb **** they have as rules

the rules is there for the users benefit, its them that end up having to look at threads with missing pics. It would make staffs job easier if we didn't have it, but that would be no use to the users

i agree with forum Hosting images
its irritating when a Guide or a thread thats is of huge relivance, where images are also important

And they've been done on photobucket - and they've moved the file and oh dearT
The thread is like a Bucket with a Hole in it

If you struggle getting to the gallery each time to upload photo's
Favorite your personal Gallery Section with an Upload Photo's button - done :)

Ziggy

obviously some people haven't been searching for something they want finally find the perfect picture they need and then there's a big photobucket thing saying its been moved or deleted :bang:

im confused about the quaility its exactly the same, and the two pictures you posted up are exactly the same

and also the gallery doesn't require you to use any BB code whatsoever you just have to copy the link in the box, the gallery is easy to use i recently uploaded about 100 photos and the only reason it took so long is coz my connection is rubbish and there huge high quality pictures

Sorry but you must have a terrible monitor, the two images are completely different on my screen. Seems ridiculous you can't see!

Fine, I understand why it's there - to help people when searching threads. BUT, why is the rule only active in one forum? And, that's not the tutorial forum?

Either way can someone please reopen my thread, it's been locked over 24 hours now and it's unnecessary. I have PMed someone to delete the incorrect images, also said it in this thread. You're happy enough to lock the thread and PM me, but you can't edit one post and unlock a thread - come on now.

im currently viewing the forum in 1080p i doubt its my monitor or graphics card/settings

have you uploaded all the images into your gallery? if yes then just be patient the mods are normal people with normal lives and have jobs and commitments etc :)

Right click both images and select properties/view image info. The first, hosted here is 54kb. The second, hosted externally, is 230kb. Now try telling me there isn't quality loss. JPG images are lossy format, so by their very nature, losing image size means losing quality.

If mods lead normal lives, how do they have the time to close threads, but not reopen them? Just two images, on page 2 of my thread, very insignificant, broke the rules. The first 5 I posted here, as I felt obliged to follow the rules at first. I merely want two images removed........ if, like on other forums, we could edit our own posts, I would do it myself, but no doubt it still wouldn't be reopened.

who is 'you'?
the report function there to generate reports for the mods
the section mod I assume you PM'd lives in Australia
so it will wait until that section to action as they see fit. Its not a priority
I suggest you review your attitude. if you think it will change opinion then you are sorely mistaken
it has got my attention though

Firstly the one on this site is a LINK to your original hosted to the one on the site. If you view the one in the Gallery itself instead of the thread then it will be the full quality image.

Wheras the one that is external hosted ISNT a link its a DIRECT copy. so obviously it will take more space.

Now for the few of us that use dial up or mobile broadband at home. i know which one i would rather load...

i can load most threads (expect pic heavy threads like "van with a differnce") Very quickly on my 3G modem.

If threads start having huge images such as your 230kb image over the 52kb file then im not going to enjoy viewing it.

On a standard monitor, then the differances so Very subtle.

I have no problems with using the sites image uploader.

I would rather see 53kb images on the forum over 230kb's, unless you are happy paying the increased download fees i'll be paying??

Clearly computer illiterate people on here. Jpeg images do not act as shortcuts to other images, what nonsense you are talking.

I don't have an 'attitude' as you like to say, I merely made a fairly convincing first post and you all decided I was being aggressive towards the existing method. I've said now, many times, since you have decided against reviewing the image policy, that I will accept it, and can my thread be reopened, yet you continue to ignore my comments and requests and instead keep fighting as if you are right.

Apologies if I am here in the 21st century, and my internet can actually handle 230kb images, I really do not see how it is my problem you can't afford a fixed line internet service, so please stop trying to make out that it's my fault. If you don't want to view large images, don't view members motors threads.

I think the bottom line comes down to this. You say that you want all images hosted on FiatForum, so that if my image hoster goes down, the thread remains intact. This is a great idea, when it works, and I am fully behind you. Only problem is you aren't as good as my image hoster for the reasons I have pointed out. You decided you can't make the images better quality, due to bandwidth issues (minimal really), you also decided the existing system was quick enough and your members were happy. As soon as someone decided to agree with me or at least voice their slightly opposing feelings, you jumped on him. Why don't you stick to one post each, let everyone have their say, instead of making this into some sort of petty internet argument where points get thrown around and no one really understands.

I merely posted as a small suggestion / query about the reasoning behind, and perhaps alternative options, and I get jumped at by everyone on here. Calm down, see my points, and consider them. Then post.

:ROFLMAO: computer illiterate. no one said that jpegs acted as shortcuts what was said that the original image can be found in your gallery and i hate to burst your bubble but the copy of your image hosted in your gallery is actually a better quailty image then the photo you posted from your hosting service

believe me i know what im talking about and so do alot of other people on hear

after all i have got years of experience, training and qualifications to do with IT and also currently doing a degree in computer games design

If you don't want to view large images, don't view members motors threads. we have a global membership, internet connections vary greatly. the site owner travels and is very often on a poor quality or mobile connection. its not a money issue

the person you have 'agreeing' with you is someone with a chip on their shoulder about another issue altogether. they are just edging onto your soapbox

calm down, there is someone who needs to calm down in this thread for sure

Hey I'm not angry, just confused. My thread gets viewed by a mod, ok, who goes into the thread. 10 seconds gone. He right clicks on the first 5 images and selects "view image info", fine, they are locally hosted, 25 seconds gone. He clicks through to page two and views two more images. He right clicks them. 5 seconds gone. It's not locally hosted. Close thread. 10 seconds gone.
He comes to PM me, PM's me, 2 minutes gone.
I PM him back with correct links, he adds them to the thread, 3 minutes gone.
He reopens the thread, 10 seconds gone.

Total time: 5 minutes +

What a waste of time. Wouldn't it be easier to tell users to report posts with missing links, moderators can delete them and whole threads if necessary. Moderating a forum isn't about using your power, it's about teaching your users. It's brilliant when you get users reporting everything, your job becomes so much easier. I'll happily report dead links to images.

I struggled in that I am new. I come to this page and, quite honestly, didn't bother reading the rules. I had glanced into other threads and noticed they were hosted in the gallery, so atttempted to do the same for mine. I made an album, uploaded the images, cool. Clicked ok, and got returned to my profile. Could I see my images anywhere? No. It said I had them, space had been used. I finally found a link to click to continue and label my images. Why?! I just want to put them in a thread. Ok, I do it. Finally I get some images. Are their forum friendly codes handy like on image hosting sites? No. I am forced to get the image tags by right clicking and "copy image source", then pasting it into the box.

It's long winded and damn confusing. I doubt it's just me that find this system a little dated. Shove a button at the top saying "Upload images", which gives a pop up box, I select multiple images, they upload in front of me and I get displayed a list of the forum friendly IMG tagged images. Sorted. I'm happy (bar the low quality).

oh, and here for comparison:

Seriously guys, on the edge of facepalm here.

I accept your rules, I will adhere to them. Now please, please, may you just reopen my thread. That is all I ask.

and for the record, couldn't be calmer.. been in far more heated situations than an internet based forum, not sure about all of you but I definitely have.
