I have the same problem, these engines are a total pain to time up! Best to get a mechanic to time it up proper mate, thats what I'm gonna do

Timing is not a big deal. As Dave says, set the pistons correctly and lock the cam(s) with the correct tools. Then fit & tension the belt. Turn it over (carefully) by hand, refit the cam lock tools and confirm the pistons are still correct.

On the 1.2 you need four equal lengths of dowel about 30cm long. Drop one down each plug hole and when the tops are all level you are at 50% stroke. Make sure you are on the correct stroke for timing or it will suck through the exhaust and blow out of the throttle.

bumping this thread from a long time ago, but i am experiencing the same things.
cambelt was changed around march and hasnt felt the same since.

feels very sluggish, especially after 5500rpm, when before it used to pull hard all the way through.

its all well and good saying you need to lock the cams when timing etc, but how would you go about re-setting the timing when its already out?

With the timing tools. The pieces that determine where the pistons are are included here.

The Haynes describes how to make them.
