Hi everyone! I've got a problem with my Fiat Punto 75SX. Since I've had it, I have been modding it up and I have dreaded of something of happening to my Punto and that is the head gasket going because i've been told that this is common with Punto's.

A local mechanic said that it has gone, but the car can be still drivable locally. He quoted me £500 to get it fixed up. When I heard this I wanted to faint, cos' I'm currently tight with my expenses at the moment and just left it. Now the car has been sitting on my driveway for the last 2-3 weeks. Anyone had their Punto head gasket replaced? If so, is this mechanic trying to con me with the price and roughly how much did it cost to fix? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
P.S. Anyone know any good reliable mechanics to fix my head gasket around the Bexley/Bexleyheath Area?

Cheers!
Thanks Again!

Aziz.

Hi mate,
I had a car with alot of engine problems, including the head gasket. the price your garage quoted you sounds a bit steep. Theres a Fiat breakers called Fiat Spares, they buy crashed Fiats and will take the part off another engine. The number is 020 7737 3886 speak to a guy called John. They are based in Loughborough Junction near Peckham. i bought a 32k miles engine, radiator, alternator and fan of them for £400 including fitting. So if you dont mind it being secound hand then i recommend them.
P.s. Pay by cash as you can haggle!! ;) I

Park road garage in Dartford do a lot of my stuff, they are very reasonable. Give a ring on 01322 271000, they can usually fit work in quickly and their rates are excellent.

its not worth buying a second hand head gasket they only cost 30-40 euros it getting the head skimmed and getting job done properly that costs it not a job to attempt without the correct know how

colin

second hand head gasket[)], a gasket is not a reusable part you never ever use an old one on a car.

Hi Everyone,
This query is for 'Dave', and anyone else who can help with this. I realised that Dave mentioned to me on my e-mail that I can fix my head gasket by myself using the Haynes Manual and parts from the Dealer.
Anyway my point is that I know a bit about cars but I've never worked under the bonnet apart from checking the engine oil, etc. Is it possible for someone like me to still get the job done correctly myself as I don't want to cause a bigger problem than what it is currently.
Thanks.

P.S. Made a few calls around my area, and still getting expensive quotes without the mechanics even looking at the car. Cheapest so far I got is £350 plus the parts. Yes thats right, plus parts. Also the garage mentioned by Evil Punto, well I've phoned them quite a number of times but their line is always busy for some reason.
Oh yeah, sorry the pic didn't upload on my previous reply on the topic. It's just a pic of my car which can be seen at the following link hopefully...

Thanks everyone!

It is possible to do yourself but you don't get the parts from Fiat, you go to a motor factor and save a small fortune, but the thing is you need some special tools torque wrench £30-£50, dial gauge £6, and a decent socket set, and you will need to find a good local machine shop to skim the head.
That quote for £350 labour is taking the P its only 4 hours work thats over £75 an hour, tell them you want a mechanic not a brain surgeon.
Ill get in touch with evil and ask about that garage, may be they are busy good garages usaly are.

Hi Aziz.
As a DIY job the bits will cost around £40, that includes oil and filters. Send the head away for skimming, around £60. While you are about it, it may be worth changing the cam belt and tensioners, approx £15. If you follow the workshap manual to the letter it can be done by a novice, and theres always here, if you get stuck.
Besides a decent socket set, a must if you own a car anyway, a torque wrench will pay for itself over time, especially if you've got friends with cars. Earn lots of favours with one of these!
So if you set yourself a target of £50 for tools, even on a tight budget you will be quids in.
Go on go on go on, give it a go!
Good luck.

Russ

Aziz if you do decide to do it your self a guy on the forums said argos do a torque wrench for £15, also there is a guy who has just got the same job done for £260ish, ive asked how far the garage is from you.
