Hi

I have a MK1,1998, R reg, 1242cc, 3door Fiat Punto 60 SX, and when ever I drive with my windows open there is a distinctive petrol smell, and is doing my swede in , I now dont drive with my windows open however when I leave the car overnight and enter my car the smell is now present, any pointers what or where the problem lies ?

Regards

Ive had the exact same problem with my 94 75SX Punto and it turned out that my Petrol Filter was leaking. I didnt always see a puddle of petrol under the car until one day i noticed it dripping. turn your key in the ignition and have a look around the fuel filter and feel around for leaks (if it isnt one with the fuel filter in the petrol tank)

Yeah thats where mine is as well... i just remember readingsome posts in the past that the fuel filter was in the petrol tank :) neway after replacing mine the smell went ! have you noticed that you are using more fuel than normal?

there is no visable leakage, in the terms of mileage, I have to put in £15-£20 a week to do 150 mile a week, I'll check out the fuel filter (the haynes manual is pants), Ill look near the tank & or the front driver side

It is most likely just infront of the rear wheel on the drivers side, normally a silver cannister looking thing with arrows pointing to the front of the car (showing which wway to put the fuel filter in with the direction of petrol) (if you can see the markings on the thing that is)

hope that helps, sorted my petrol smell out. As I say I had a smell of petrol for about 2/3 weeks and didnt see any leaks until one day i happened to notice a puddle below my car which after smelling was petrol.

Most definately the filter, the other 1/2 has got the same motor but a sporting and hers went about 3wk ago.

this is my first time posting a reply to thread....i dunno whether i'm correct or not....petrol smell is due to fuel pump leak under the back seat...please check...

I think maslian is right because I have just looked under the car on the right hand side of the fuel tank as well as the front I could not find the fuel filter, anyway after reffering to the H manual it states that the 1242 cc made 1998 onwards has a modified integral fuel filter with the fuel pump so it look like a new pump at my local Fiat delaership, it states in the H Manual that Fuel filter not required on these types of pumps which is clearly wrong, what worries me I had the car serviced last December, at a well known Garage in Nuneaton (which incoperates a takeaway a mini supermarket) which happended to charge me for a fuel filter change according to the service receipt argghhh

fuel pump cover is made of plastic...the leakage is from plastic tube/pipe (fuel line) which might be broken..have to modified it to save costs...

Thats the bloody filter! integral part of the pump situated just in front of o/s rear arch. Thats what ive just replaced like for like less than 3wks ago on a 1998 Fiat Punto sporting1.2 16v.
Dont bother modifying when messing with something as dangerous as fuel, If you cant afford a new one go down your local salvage yard and get one - no more than a fiver!!

I had same problem last year, fuel line was leaking a little and there was a small pool of petrol collecting. Was fixed as part of service/MOT didnt add much to price.

Where is on punto II 1,2 8v fuel filter, I need to replace because petrol smell from exhaust. Does someone have manual how to replace fuel filter.

The fuel filter is inside the fuel tank on a MK2 Punto.. (n) Have you replaced your spark plugs recently thats one thing that can cause unburnt fuel from exhaust.. ?

I can't believe you lot 'modifying' a £4.80 fuel filter becauuse you can't be bothered to go get a new one (less than five pound in a motorfactors, £16 in halfrauds, and its made by teh same company, you decide which to pay:rolleyes: ).

if the car is throwing unburn't fuel out the exhaust consider new plugs, new ht leads, worst case new coils.
but first, have you left the car for a long period of time (>2weeks) without driving it, or unplugged battery recently. as either will cause the ecu to start relearning its maps, and it usually reverts to a very rich mixture first to avoid engine damage, then gradually leans till things look rosie then stores it.
My mk1 had been left for 7weeks along, parents used it a few times, then being the idiots they are, couldn't figure out how to turn ignition barrel!!. anyway, when i returned battery was flat and the car ran like ass, and stank of petrol in a dangerous way.
after about 200miles and a week of driving it went away. it was simply the ecu freaking out because the battery had gone dead. at 200miles the smell had gone completly.

Sorry to drag this thread up

But i have noticed a smell of petrol, with the engine running looked underneath and well to my suprise there is a fine spray of petrol coming from what looks like a cannister with a steel belt around it thats all corroded....

Is this the filter thats leaking or pipework, and most of all, will i have to drain the tank to do anything? (assuming its not the filter of course!)

Very worrying as this is happening at tick over! god only knows what at high speed....

heres a pic...
