sounds like your wiper motor has fallen victim to the water in the basin under the windscreen.
I had the same issue just over a year ago, the drainage ports in the tray under the windscreen - under the front wipers - tend to get blocked by leaves etc, these have to be cleaned often otherwise water will fill the tray and drown the motor.
You will also often get a louder operation noise and the wipers may also judder / stop working on the lower speed settings.
A new motor will cost you around £40 from eurocarparts, i went in store to get mine and now trust them for car parts
(I cant seem to find the part on there website at the moment so im not 100% sure if the part is ~£30-£40 or £90? i bought 2 items at the time i got the wiper motor, so im not sure which cost 90

To get to the motor you will need to remove the wiper arms using a socket then, open the bonnet and disconect the washer tube that conects to the bonnet, undo 8 or so screws then pull the plastic out - with the bonnet open thought the gap under the bonnet and engine bay - the plastic will flex quite far
Once off you will see the linkage - comes off with 3 bolts and an eletrical plug, undo the plug and remove the whole lot = linkages and motor, turn the motor as required (I used the car's eletrics to turn mine) - so that you can get to the 3 screws that hold the motor on
Refit with new motor and the reverse of removal
