Hi

my mk1 8v sx60 punto broke down yesterday ,the just engine just cut out it still has power and if you turn the key you can hear the starter motor turning over and I can also smell petrol coming from the carb . I moved the cover covering the cambelt to see if the belt had snapped which as far as I can see it hasn’t but when I turn the car over the cambelt doesn’t move as in the engine isn’t turning over just the starter motor.

Any ideas what the problem could be(y)

hi i had similar problem few years back the cambelt teeth folded over allowing valve timing to go out could be you have stripped teeth off belt and crank shaft pulley has nothing to drive with check crank shaft pulley is turning when you operate starter if its turning and camshaft isnt you need to replace timing belt

Car doesn't have a carb and you shouldn't be able to smell petrol from it.

As said check the teeth on the cambelt. Take both covers off and have a good luck around it.
Can only smell petrol from throttle body when the timing is out

Check all the electrical connections that suport the spark plugs. If there is no spark, you will just flood the engine with unburnt fuel, which is probably what you can smell.

Check things like the distributor connections (if you have one?) and the coil connections.

If it cut out while you were driving though it's not looking good. The starter turning over turns the crankshaft which if the cambelt isn't moving then all the teeth around the crankshaft have sheared off and for the force needed to do that your camshaft must have seized. Could be wrong but seems most likely.
Had a head gasket change recently by any chance? or your oil looking very thick? Blocked oil ways from thick oil or a headgaket on the wrong way can cause it. That or a failed oil pump
