Hi everyone , Does anyone know if the mk1 gearbox is the same as the mk2 ?:confused:

I have a punto 1.2 8v w reg 2000 and my gearbox lost all its gears so i am about to purchase another from a breakers yard BUT I dont know if the Mk1 will fit a Mk 2 . anyone help me please .
Also my stearing suddenly went heavy on me with no power stearing working so I thought lets top up the power stearing fluid but couldnt find the refill ? So got me thinking if the power stearing on this model is electric ? if so why would it go heavy .. When I turned the car off and started it back up it was fine again.:bang:

Thanks for the input ;) lets hope its not a serious problem?

Yes it does have the city button but I dont use it .:)

your gearbox problem could only be the clutch that has gone.. it happened too me a while back and seems to be a common problem with puntos.. see if its cheaper to get a new clutch fitted before looking at a new gearbox..

Yours power steering problem hmmm.. i know that its electrical so it will be down to a motor of some sort...
Have you noticed your steering light comin on the dash at all?

Ive taken the box out the box has no drive at all . Put brand new clutch with new presure plate and new thrush bearing made no difference with box put back on. You can put it into gear and it dont make a sound or any movement . Checked the box when it was out turned the driveshaft cups and the drive in the centre of the box didnt move so I know the box is scrap. I have the choice of a mk1 box but I dont know if it fits or not:confused:
As for the stearing light it has come on befor for about 2 seconds and gone off again ?

hmmmm not sure then on the gear box..

but my steering light comes on every now and then for split seconds and goes off.. are you hearing any odd noises that sound like somethings spinning but no catching something? (if you get what i mean :p)

Hello
If ive understood correctly it does sound like a problem with the diff not engaging with the final gear drive
The diff is bolted onto the gearbox by 5 or 6 bolts and with the box dropped its very easily checked over by removing the diff front casing

Heres a couple of photos from my gearbox restoration project to get the idea but obviously cant discount the problem being within the gearbox proper(my other thought is it could be the internal selector forks not engaging the gears through broken linkage somewhere??) but if the box is dropped its at least worth a look at the diff

Im certainly no expert on gearboxes but who knows this may help :)

It is entirely possible that the crown wheel is (should be) bonded to the diff, not bolted.

This bond can break.

Take the diff out of the back of the box and make sure the crown wheel is still attached.

The steeing needs a speed reading from the diff, iits not getting one, it ll be confused, although there are issues with columns. Do take time to check the FAQS.

Cheers
