Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

You will need:

Either:
A Torx T25 Driver;
or
A Socket wrench with the hex adaptor and Torx T25 bit

Carb Cleaner Spray;

An old toothbrush;

and A rag or old t-shirt.
  1. Remove the air filter box to expose the throttle body
  2. Disconnect the Negative terminal of the battery

3.Unplug the 2 connectors on the left side of the Throttle Body. Make sure to unclip them before pulling (or unclip whilst pulling). The top one can easily be pulled by hand out towards you.
The second I gently pulled with pliers.

4. Undo the two bolts holding the ECU to the Throttle body. You can lift it up and push it back a little.
You should also remove the ECU earthing cable. I couldn't unbolt mine however meaning I had to clean in situ.

5. Release the inner accelerator cable from the Throttle Cam. You need to push the cam forward to slacken the cable, then bring the cable through the gap, then wiggle the end bit out.
Then pull the outer cable from the rubber grommet then the inner cable through it
6. Undo the Three bolts holding the Throttle Body onto the Inlet Manifold.

7. Lift out the throttle body to clean. I used an old t-shirt to stop carb cleaner getting everywhere. Give a good spray and scrub with a toothbrush or rag (I found that the toothbrush made it much easier).

8. Once you're happy with the result, dry it out and refit making sure the mating surfaces of the Inlet Manifold and Throttle Body are clean and dry. You may want to fit a new O-ring, I left mine because it looked ok.

Work backwords to refit

When you have put the Accelerator Cable back in the Throttle Cam get someone to press the Accelarator pedal whilst you watch to make sure that the Throttle Body opens and closes smoothly

Just done this to mine and it fixed my pulsing idle.
Hope this helps some people

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

A real doddle to do, makes a world of difference. Although I can still feel vibrations, but that's thanks to the engine and gearbox mounts, which have almost 110.000 miles under their belts. Idle is nice though.

Although it is best practice to disconnect the battery, you don't actually touch or interact with any electrics, so not an important step.

Done mine at about 61K
And dam there is some thick long life sludge there...

Removed mine - cleaned it all up - and that grunchy/rough throttle pedal action = FIXED
light and little resistance pedal is a nice action

I managed to get my Earthing cable out - long allen key - cracked it and wound it out
Cleane the connector and mounting spot - copper ease and back together it went

At this point - it is well worthwhile checking the throttle cable tension - as it ages and stretchs it'll need readjusting

you have disconnected plugs to do this removal and clean
errors will be logged and bat removal will be reqd afterwards anyway
thats why disconnect battery is logical and its safer anyway to stop tools dropping and shorting on electrics
stick with the main plan and always disconnect battery when removing any engine parts also stops someone trying to start engine

question for op
just got a punto and never really worked on anything apart from german and jap
gonna do this tomorrow along with air filter change and breather clean , spark plugs etc
due to oil vapour gum accumulated over time and have slight rich running

is the plugs tps and map ?
map on these engines as a primitive setup of maf to calculate for fueling?
is map sensor removal reqd to clean and see if this improves fueling?

as i cant figure just the gum on the butterfly valve being the culprit for running rough

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

ignore my question

after a little research
looks like tps and idle control valve on throttle body

map on manifold

think im gonna do what ive done to most of my turbo motors that breath crap on the inlet.

blank off hole at air intake for breather
vent breather to atmosphere
stops the build up of oil vapour on inlet and associated sensors or actuators

worse on turbos as more is breathed and to more things.

but a length of hose is no big deal to do the mod

Potentiometers are throttle position sensor and stepper motor.

If errors are stored, EOBD warning light on, because you haven't disconnected battery they are cleared after 3 start ups.

8valver, I have no idea what you're talking about.
You seem to have a better idea than me.

I simply followed the haynes manual and took photos to make it as easy as possible for others to follow

I'm a bit of a novice and the haynes has been worth its weight in gold

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

Old thread, But just thought I'd say thanks, cleaned mine today at 68k (probably for the first time) and you can now see the gaps where air should pass through around the copper plate thing (Which where previously clogged as its a tiny gap!)

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

Sorry to bring up an old thread - is this the same for the 1.4 16v, even slightly?

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

quicker and easier way is spray wd40 into the carb it loosens all the dirt and grime. wipe it clean then repeat and your done. do this one mine and works fantastically. 5 minute job and gives the same results.

Re: Remove and clean Throttle Body 1.2 8v

There is no carb. WD won't touch the the hard glaze inside the throttle body it's like bloody varnish but ironically carb cleaner shifts it?

What a great guide, though I am seeing it the wrong side of removing TB and inlet manifold, will clean them up another day. Wasn't a difficult job, just some bolts a bit tricky with my giant hands
