Oh dear  My Mk1 doesn't want to let me in the boot. The key simply doesn't work anymore in the lock of the boot (no idea why), and the little lever for it next to the drivers side has go completely slack and does absolutely nothing.

If I take that plastic cover off the sill, will I find the boot release cable there? Or would I have to take some of the carpet up? Any ideas how this could have happened?

Cheers
Matt

same happened to me, although not both at same time.

the lock barrels ARE dodgy, and when you get the boot finally open, take it out, pour wd40 in it and play with it untill it works.

sounds like the plastic boot-open lever tab is broke, take off the nut holding it and pull the cable with pliers, to see if it works. expect a stiff resistance. if the tab is broke, go to a scrappie and get a new one(y)

Probably a broken cable, access to lever and cable is gained by taking off the plastic sill cover, one cross head screw each end , then carefully pull at cover,it is held in by plastic grips along its length, the release lever is held in place by one screw, the carpet will lift out of place once you remove sill cover

on the mk 1 its a simple job to remove seat ,just a couple of bolts front and back, gives you much more room to play with

Got the plastic cover off, then took the lever off, so I could get a look. The wire had just fallen off the catch, and getting it back on was not easy, it's so dam tight. As soon as I reattached it, screwed it back on, tried it, and then boom. It just slipped off  . So I tried a couple more times, then walked off in a huff :)
