Hi,

Ive been browsing the forums and loads have said a similar thing to what i will but none has any solutions so here it goes -

When i start my my y reg 1.2 punto its making a fast clicking/knocking noise when the engine has been left idle overnight etc. if i put my foot down on the accelerator it gets slightly faster. This all came about when my cylinder gasket blew and i had the head sorted.ever since its never been the same. its been in 3 diff garages and all 3 have said they cant find anything.
My friend said it could be the pistons hitting the side of teh chambers? is this true because he said if it is they will eventually wear the sides down and kill the engine or do some serious damage.
On the other hand someone said i may just need an oil change :s ! duno how but it was a coincidence since the gasket problem.

Any help would be great.

cheers

Right.. im not to up to date with fiats as yet only had the stilo a few weeks...

i had similar symptoms with my k-series engined rover..

pistons hitting chambers???.. sounds like you re describing Piston slap... where the piston rocks in the bore... its mostly obvious on a cold engine and dissapears once warmed up..personally if a mech hasnt picked up on it ... it wont be piston slap..... very obvious...

If the 1.2 is DOHC it sounds like a cam follower problem.(others call it Tappets or lifters ) possibly mucked up from head gasket failure...

Was the engine flushed after head gasket change... Forte flush??

does it quieten down once up to temp??

is it more noticable under load or on deceleration??

like i said im not to up to date on fiat engines as yet... but might halp a bit(y)

thanks for the reply.

yeah once the engine warms up it seems to go away. im not sure if it was flushed after the head gasket problem but ever since its never been the same! with my punto its been problem after problem. my ecu went yesterday and cost an astounding 320 quid! think it maybe time to cut my losses and go german! because this is not what you expect from a car with 40k on the clock

1.2 8v's do sound very tappey when cold, well mine always did.

If you do get out, I would seriously consider going Japanese for reliability rather than German
