Hiya :)

My Mk2 Punto Sporting is making a funny noise :yuck: It's been doing it for about 3 months but seems to be getting louder. It's kinda like a whhoooaawww sound, quite low in tone and seems to be coming from the passenger side, not sure if front or back. It only happens when cruising say 30mph + , not when turning corners or going slow.

Any ideas? Could it be a rear wheel bearing or something much more sinister?

Cheers :)

Nicola

Hello Custard Boy :)

The noise is only there when cruising along in a straight line, it's not there during stop start traffic, turning corners or driving slowly for whatever reason.
Do you stick with your guess of front wheel bearing? How much is it likely to cost to be replaced if it is that? Is it a DIY job or do you need some sort of press?
I will get the wheels jacked up later on to see if there is any play.

well you can do the strip down and take the strut to a garage for the pressing to save cash.
what you tend to find with front bearings is as you speed up the noise increases in a whawhawhawha type noise but if you turn a bend in the road the sound goes away as the bearing is loaded.

Oh yes, you have the right noise there Custard :D

Whats the worst case scenario with a wheel bearing then? Could the wheel just fall off  Is it an ASAP job?

Ok thanks, will get the wheels jiacked tonight to see if there is any play in them and look to get it sorted ASAP

Thanks Custard Boy :)

Well I had the wheels jacked up last night and theres no movement or play in any of them. I did notice however, that I have an odd tyre at the back. The other three are Pirelli P6000 185/55/R15 V and the odd one is some obscure cheapo brand. perhaps it's just road noise this sound that I'm hearing?
