Hi,

Bit of a mysterious problem with my 1996 55SX. Driving along a dual carriageway when I noticed a slight change in noise and the power went. It took me a few seconds to realise that the engine wasn't running any more. Luckily managed to roll most of the way home, and push the rest, hoping for a few pointers to what the problem might be.

1) Engine turns over OK, but doesn't start
2) All electrics seem OK
3) No warning lights on
4) No prior warning of the problem

I'm presuming an ignition problem, but i would have expected a warning light on.

Any ideas,

Thanks.

Sudden failure of the sort you describe is usually down to one of two things, an electrical component or connector failing or timing belt. If the engine turns over quickly when cranking then its likely to be timing belt, remove the belt cover to see if the camshaft drive turns when cranking the engine. If you have all your warning lights on for start up then it could be electronic but first thing I would check is valve timing.
