Around a week ago I noticed that sometimes when I braked I would hear a grinding sound. This happened last year and it turned out the brake pads had completely worn out on one side, but we had them replaced and it passed an MOT shortly after, no problems since till now, 10 months later. What on earth could it be? Some days it won't happen at all then others it happens a lot. Today I noticed it was happening more and more often, and when I drive away after braking, the grinding noise continues for a while. I tried pressure washing the wheels as a friend said it could be grit, but that's not helped.

Could my brake pads have worn out already? Is it something else? Any ideas are welcome, thanks!

Did you have all the pads replaced it just the worn out ones?

Allthrough my guess would be your callipers are sticking the need removing and cleaning very well along with the reaction frames they sit in

If you sit for a few days - the discs will develop very minor surface rust
But sounds horrendous when you do first few couple of presses

However if you have a caliper thats dragging a pad itll destroy it quicker than it should

Inspect - dont ignore it

It could be a seized slider - pads hung up in the caliper - could be the piston itself!

Rust ridges on edges of discs will also cause weird and wonderous noises

Ahh... I wonder if that's why the other morning when I went to drive off it felt like I was stuck, even though the handbrake wasn't on, then suddenly it released and I could drive again. As far as I know there is only pads on the front wheels, we replaced both of those, the back are drum brakes I think, I dunno if they would make a grinding sound if they weren't working?

Thanks for the advice!
