Hi, I m new to the forum. Yesterday I ve noticed something strange, when I turned the car on everything was ok, all the lights on the dash turned off, while driving i saw the key code (immobiliser) light on, because i was afraid , i didnt want the car to stop in the traffic, i pulled over , i ve turned it off and on again and it was ok after that. This thing happened two times the past two days. The light wasn't flickering it just stood there on.
So do you know what may cause the problem? Also the most important thing is , If the light turns on again (while driving and not when i try to start the engine) after some meters will the car turn off by it's self ? If yes, after how many meters? Moreover, if it turns off while driving , will i be able to ignite it right away?Or i have to wait some minutes. If i connect an OBD will it show some error code with more specific details about the problem?

PS1. when i pulled over and turned it off and on , i didnt pull the key out, i just turned it off and on and everything worked fine.

PS2.Because i bought it from someone else, i dont have a secondary key nor the card with the key code, i was about to go and make a copy of the key these days. Is there any way that might be the key problematic ?

i have a fiat punto mk2 8v 188a4

I would really appreciate if you could help me.
thanks in advance.

getting a copy done isn't as easy as it used to be im affraid :(

You need a diagnostic tool / key programming software to get a 2nd key programmed into the ECU

As for why the light comes on
Bit random for it to suddenly come on while driving?
usually i find it comes on right after a Near stall condition (engine stops for a split second - but i sorta bump start straight away)
And the immboliser freaks out - as the engine started without it doing owt

Usually the light comes on after engine start to say
- signal recieved but partially missing
- 2 signals recieved (if you have house alarm fobs / keyless entry for gates or other car keys on your set etc)
It gets confused but since it got the correct one - off it went

Code read to find out what the car saw / thinks is going on :)
I suspect it'll be u1600 - u1604 code range

Ziggy

I have a keyless entry system installed (after market) but i have it installed for 3 months now with no problem, what do you mean it may received 2 codes exactly?
Also for the part that the engine may stopped for a split of second, i didn't notice it but the thing happened on the same road , a very strange small one that i always go very slow with low rpm, so there is a chance that it may have stopped for a sec and because i had 2nd gear it ignited it self by the force the car had. Dont know.
Also if i get the light while driving, is there a chance the car to turn off and i have to stop and turn it on again ? if yes, in how many meters will it turn off? and also will i have to wait some minutes or i can ignite it right away again?

thanks again , i really appriciate it.

The problem lies with how you operate the car, or to be more precise, with the way you turn the key to start the car.

When I bought my own Punto Mk2 Active 8V back in 2002 from Lamda Co. in Northern Athens, the head of the Technical Department had a chat with me just prior to driving the car off their premises.

He told me just two things:

1. That I should consider buying a new Car Stereo with controls on the wheel (BTW, we in Greece never gotten the Blaupunkt Car Stereo that British Puntos sold with as standard equipment).

2. That I should be very freaking careful with how I start the car. In particular, he told me that if you turn the key too fast to start the car without waiting first for the key icon on the panel to go off, the car's computer may bug and I may get issues.

According to the same person from Lambda, this was a known issue, and they regularly got Puntos with issues having to do with the key icon which could be solved if the operator (i.e. the driver) just was very careful with how they started the car and waited for the key icon to go off before they started the car.

I followed his advice and never had problems with it.

So my advice to you is, start the car gently and wait for they key icon to go off (light off) before you start the car.

OH, never heard about that before, thanks. Also i cleared the faults with obd, the only code that had was on pending U1601. Since then never got the key light on again.

My immobiliser light goes on every now and then. As long as it's yellow it's not an issue. If you look it up in the owners manual, it says that it's just for checking battery level of the key. It goes off again with next turnover.
