Im no car expert..

I am due to take my driving test soon so i decided to buy myself a punto for when i do pass! Bad idea i know!

I viewed it at a garage where the garage was shutting down so the deal got done at one of the owners house. All seemed fine, car was working perfect. He delivered it to us 20 miles away. My dad has taken it around the block a few times since the last time was a week and half ago. Yesterday i decided to start it up so it doesnt die by sitting there...

After starting it and switching on the wipers/lights/ anything electronic i heard a juddering. I switched it off switched it back on and the juddering stayed but got alot worse. Today my dad took it out he only got to the end of the street and back. The engine light is on and seems to be missfiring. Does anyone please have any advice? Would be greatly appreciated..

Hi.
I can't really help you with your problem but I have the same problem on my punto.
I've changed both coil packs, all ht leads, plugs and ecu and the problem is still there.
Took it to a fiat garage and they said they had no clue.. (not going back to that crappy place again). Just about to give up on this car :p
I would take it to a garage before starting to throw money at it :)

I just have to add that i'm a bit clueless when it comes to cars:)

to many shady coincidences with cars going bad shortly after they are sold, call back the guy who sold it and tell him whats wrong, tell him to either fix the problem for free or give money back

Does it sometimes cut out on you unexpectedly and is the engine light on? Thanks so much for the advice though!

Yeah there is fuel in, I have parked on a driveway sloping down and sometimes it shows a little more but i have around quater of a tank

Hi, and welcome, :)
sorry it's in these circumsatances.. BUT we'll try to help..,;)

the engine light on will have left a fault code - so any garage / code reader can access this info.

that code will help narrow down the issue.. however it does sound a bit dodgy after a week and very little use..,

so a conversation with the seller would be a good 1st step,

where are you based?,

The engine light is on constantly now.
It can cut out any time or place.. by this time I've learned.. I expect it to happen all the time so that i can enjoy the surprise of it not cutting out on me sometimes:p

Thought at first that the problem was lambda related since the front lambda had caused problems before. Changed it a month ago and after that it has been running perfect some days.. But most days it's horrible to drive!

I probably should not be driving it, but I have no choice. And right now I'm so fed up by this car that i really don't care if it brakes down on me

Juddering normally suggests a misfire on a cylinder(s). This could be caused by ignition, fuel, air or lack of compression.

Simple test to start with is checking your ignition. To do this, pull a ht lead out while the engine is running. Can you see and hear arcing to the engine block? Pulling a leading which is providing good spark will make the juddering worse or may even stall the engine. Pulling a lead which makes no difference to the engine running tells you which cylinder is misfiring.

Use caution though - ht leads transport very high voltage!

Thank you so much ill give that a go tomorrow! I just didn't want to pay out mega amounts when it may just be something stupid like a wire. I know because of not having a clue garages could easily rip me off and say it was a different problem but id rather get advice first of others who have experienced it.

Hopefully wont cost me an arm and leg as my insurance will be sky high and i haven't drove the bloody thing yet..lol x

thankyou! Im based in Wolverhampton so quite a drive away! If its not anything i can fix myself such as spark plug etc i will do this. Just want to start of with the cheapest first really...Thank you

Best advice above is Get The Codes Read.

If it's a misfire, the code may be very helpful in diagnosing it: for example, it may say it's P0301, which will point you to cylinder 1. You can then focus your attention on that cylinder. Anything else really is just speculation, you need to arm yourself with facts.

A local garage will code read for very little / free, it only takes a few minutes.

The punto is no worse than any other car, they all operate on roughly the same principles, and all suffer if there is no proper maintenance.
