I just acquired a Punto 1.2 8v Active (2004). There's a few queries I'd like to ask about.

1) The airbag light is on, think this is due to the passenger airbag being turned off. The ignition key won't work to turn it back on. How do I go about turning it on, buying a new key? If so, how much is that likely to set me back?

2) The oddometer/clock is flashing when the engine is on. I've read this is to do with the CAT system and needs a 'proxy alignment', but could be the battery on it's way out. Would I be able to carry out a proxy aligment myself using something like Multi ECU Scan or no? If not how much would it cost roughly in a garage?

3)When I fill the car with fuel it stops every few seconds and so takes a really long time to fill. From what I've read it's something to do with the anti-syphoning system. Is there any way to fix this or do I have to live with it?

Cheers in advance.

1. red airbag light or yellow?
2.flashing speedo, they probably changed it to a lower mileage one
3. i got that too, nothing to worry about, just dont fully squeeze gas handle and it will fill without stopping ( makes people around you think you just topped up a punto)

Both the yellow child airbag light and the red airbag light are on. (see below)

The fuel issue is just very very annoying as it takes so long to fill up.

Yellow means passenger airbag disabled for child seat fitting
Red mean airbag system fault, USUALLY when they both come on, its a sign of the airbag exclusion switch been at fault, its cropping up alot on punto's now
BUT - its a big BUT - YOU NEED A CODE READ TO DERTERMINE THE FAULT!!

If its the passenger exclusion switch its a 30min fix DIY and costs about a £10er :)
There is a very very good video on youtube done by a member on here :) (STEP UP ANDY!)

2 - The clock and MILEAGE IS FLASHING
This is the sign of somebody fitting a donor dash to the vehicle, the dash will work, but its not quiet talking the cars language
Using MES (Multi ecu scan) On a paid edition, you can correct this
However - it may be a laymans way to clock the car

IF the mileage on the dash thats fitted is higher then the cars logged mileage, the clock CAN NOT be put back to meet the cars mileage

So if the cars done say 60K, and the dash is at 80K - this is tough luck - you've just gain 80K on it, dropping its value alot

IF you can find a donor dash thats done less
So say your at 75K, and you find one at 70K, thats fine, the proxy alignment can correct the mileage and bring it upto 75K

Re Punto Fueling
Its a PITA, its a knack you get for it
And some pumps are worse then others
Its the pumps anti-syphon that causes it, the trapped air in the tank forces the fuel back to the nozzle and trip the pump out

I've got a good nack of leaving about a 1 - 2mm gap around the nozzle by not fully inserting it. This allows the air to escape and the fuel to enter. Very rarely get to go full wack filling because it'll just click :(

Some people have had success with having the nozzle and bizarre angles

Good luck with that :)

angles always work for me..!!;)

the wiring block at the back of airbag switch can be fragile ( I broke mine):bang:

best bet.. take YOUR ign key to a scrap yard, and get a switch that it fits/ operates,

undo your cars battery, then wait 30 mins,
then get under dash and prise switch out, and unplug, fit new switch..,

double check lock works.., then reconnect power.. ;)
you MAY need MES to clear fault code's + lights, :)

^ you wouid have to take the switch in to a locksmith,
theyd make a key up for it..or just switch it to the on position,

plenty in scrapyard, just make sure it in on position, no key needed then,

95% sure the lock barrel is clipped in situ, :)

so once you've got one that "works" you can mix+ match, barrel to switchgear;)

mine still hasn't been swapped back..been like that for 2 years..!!:rolleyes:

pretty sure I needed MES to clear the lights..even after switch wiring was fixed

Dont bother with a new swtich
most of the time is a wiring issue to start with

IF the switch is proven faulty - then yes replace it
Keep the key from the scrappy for it!

The barrel is fixed into place with a little spring clip. If the switch is turned on get one from scrapyard thats turned on like oldhammer said. Then i would get the new wiring from fiat £9. Then get a set of the cables and reset the light. Should solve the issue.

But i would get cable first and find out what the issue is

mine split the rear casing ( tugged cable), so wasn't making connections reliably on the "slip-ring",
= BOTH lights on, like MaxTheLad reports..,:)

BUT as Ziggy says getting MES to confirm codes / fault location IS the obvious 1st step.., ;)

Especially considering replacing faulty switch MAY NOT clear fault lights instantly..

I used Multi ECU Scan to check for errors and it came up with the following:

I cleared the errors and the airbag lights have gone off and stayed off after a drive. Hopefully they won't bother me again but on the off chance that they come back on, is the fix that Ziggy suggested correct for the codes above?

Code 14 - You need the wiring modification loom if the code comes back, which it may do after 1hr - 1day - 1 week - 1month
Usually once it starts - IT WILL COME BACK, had both my punto's :(
Only the mk2b got the fix though!

Code 02 - Your battery may have been low on starting - battery has gone flat but flat enough for ignition - This code i'd ignore
