Styling Number Plate Bulb

Styling Number Plate Bulb

Hi does anyone know how I can make the number plate area light up better but it has to be legal for uk roads

:D Thanks

You could retrofit an LED strip up under the lip where the normal bulbs are and wire them in to the original bulb wiring, its bright and looks smart; might be worth a look! You can find the LED strips anywhere, search ebay for "30cm LED strip" and those should be perfect size/brightness + length to sit in there as they are adhesive backed too!

Technically Not road legal those LED Strips, meant for offroad use only :(

Maybe you need to find 2 Half sphere style lights - so you can mount one each side with 2x Led bulbs to get it brighter?

Technically no LEDs are legal, it's just those strips are crap and won't last 5 minutes especially in bad weather

You could try simply replacing the bulb. They grow dim over time. I've just replaced one bulb on a twin set up and the new one is twice as bright with my eyeball lightometer.

Hi.
I understand that it is not legal to fit something like led bulb. But why ?
Because number is better lighted and in case of something wrong police can take easier a picture ?
I use one led-bulb for number plate.
Why new cars had led bulbs ?

All bulbs in my car are with LED fitted. Only headlight H7, H7, H3 are with Philips BlueVision. Both headlights are new from two month ago.
I don't want to sell this car :)

Regards
Mike

in the uk all cars are subject to the uk lighting regulations 1989 (or something like that) back then LEDs made a good display for your "pocket" calculator or bed side alarm clock but were no where near bright enough to use in car lights. As such those 1989 regulations don't say anything about any other sort of bulb other than 'incandescent' bulbs so standard tungsten filament type bulbs

As we are part of Europe we are also subject to european laws which in a number of ways are different from our own and when a new manufacturer builds a new car they have to prove it meets the standards laid down in law (same as an sva test for a kit car) this is called european type approval, so new cars that meet european type approval are compliant with EU law and able to have LED Lights, HID lights and driver aids and technology not covered under Uk laws.

The issue is your punto was type approved back in 1998 for the mk2 or 2003 for the mk2b and neither of those cars ever came fitted with leds hids or any other fancy technologies so by both uk and EU laws LEDs on your car are illegal, however the police, Vosa and the dvla don't crack down massively on these thing because with nearly 40,000,000 cars in the uk it's a battle they will never win so they will only pick out those cars which are obviously dangerous or causing problems to other road users, like most cars fitted with after market HIDs

And so concludes the tale of why your car is by word of the law of the uk and Europe 'Ilegal'

seen afew car's lately with Led number plate lights.

all they do is flicker, id stay with the original bulb's.

I should confess I have recently fitted a LED bulb to light my number plate  as an experiment though, fine on my mk2b but errors the dash on my grande as the grande checks the number plate bulb for failure.

All the 'brighter' LEDs achieve is lighting the ground a bit better (y)

Iwas going to fit some in my car.
but after seeing them flicker on other car's igave up on the idea.

look at some of the cars fitted with them & you will see what imean by flickering..

Hi again
I understand what you all are writing - this are illegal.
But somebody need to think about this with his brain. Not reading old information from old books. If number plate is better visible so why not change old " uk lighting regulations 1989 " to something younger, better, stylish.
I am 54 year old :D
I don't install HID in my headlights. I prefer to pay for new !
I spend £££ for bulbs. Only bulbs under 7 pound / piece are crap.
I don't have bulbs with flickering.
Yellow light in my dash are off :). Where i need i install resistors.

Ok so a number of points here but the first one being is it takes years to change the law and the installation of LEDs in your Punto isn't exactly high on the current parlement's agenda right now.
As an example at the beginning of te months they were talking about the statute of Marlborough. A 740+ year old law that some parts of still form part of our current legal system.

Organisations like Vosa as a result issue guidance rather than being able to overrule law, it just means if you're nice to PC plod he will turn a blind eye, however **** him off and he can and will make your like hell. telling PC plod that he needs to "think about it with his brain" is unlikely to help your cause.

Our entire legal system is found in dusty old books and remember it's those books that protect you against everything from theft to fraud, and intimidation to insest, so they do have there uses

If you get decent ones, they won't flicker. Unfortunately, people insist on buying cheap crap powered by ICs designed in the 80s.
