Hey

I just wondered if anyone had the handbook for the 1.2 elx speedgear and could list what is meant to be done on the full service and mileages? (handbook didn't come with mine and keep forgetting to buy one :bang: )

My car is just over 60k miles. Had new belt done a little before I bought it last december (don't have the folder with me with exact date so don't know about water pump).

A friend of my parents said they will do a full service for £106 but I wanted to check with you guys on what should be done in a full service.

I plan on changing gearbox oil and filter week after next as I have a clunk when putting car into gear.

Any advice would be really useful thank you.

60,000 miles equates to about 96,500 km -- so I think you'd be looking at a 100,000 km service. According to the owner handbook...
  • Check tyre conditions and wear
  • Check front disc brake pad wear and warning light operation
  • Inspect conditions of exterior, underbody, all pipes and hoses, rubber parts, fuel feed and braking system hosing
  • Top up fluids
  • Change engine oil
  • Replace pollen filter (if fitted)
...so not an awful lot, really; and I'd be more worried about the age of components, rather than mileage (especially as it's so low...). :chin:

Hopefully the water pump and stat were replaced with the belt, as you say; and, although, theooretically, the gearbox oil should wait until the next service, you already know that I think changing it is A Good Thing...! (y)

If you also have any doubts about the braking system, maybe worth replacing the brake fluid; checking the handbrake cables, shoes and drums, at the rear, etc..

PS: Looking back at the above list, there's not a lot that you can't do yourself, really -- depending on your capabilities and confidence, of course. Eurocarcare.net or Shop4Parts both offer discounts to FF (donated?) members: so any parts needed should be (relatively) cheap. However, if you want the good feeling that comes with a qualified mechanic giving the car a thorough once-over, I would totally understand...! :)

Thank you for this info!

Thermostat was changed by me the other week. Will dig out the folder and see about water pump. If this wasn't done at time of the belt is it too late to do it now or can it be done now without redoing the belt?

Tyres should all be good as I had them changed in march (y)

Braking is pretty sharp I must say so that should be all good

my main concern is the underside, pipes etc. I aim to put new interior and do a fair bit to the car but only if it is mechanically 'sound' (as much as a punto can be) and has a good life left in it!

Thanks :D

Yes: as long as you ensure the timing (and I presume it's a 16v, like mine -- so you need special tools, I'm afraid...) is maintained correctly: there's no reason not to keep the belt. (y)

I empathize completely! :)

Worth getting any old underseal removed, then, and redoing it properly -- i.e. right up into the rear wheel-arches; treating any emerging rust, etc.. Not a fun job -- but one that comes with lots of satisfaction, knowing that you're extending the life of the car...!

If you've not already read my Members Motors thread, then it might give you an idea of what you're letting yourself in for... -- but then I know I'm overly thorough; and have hopes that, one day, the car will have an equal footing as a classic with my Mk2 Pandas.... :nutter:

I will make sure the timing gets checked when it goes for it's service then! :)

I have read through your thread a few times actually as there doesn't seem to be many of our cars around on here!

Underseal will get looked at i think then. Will see what the guy says about the overall condition of the car and go from there.

Ultimately I don't mind putting money into the car as long as I know it is in a reasonable way before I do so. Partner is going to start learning to drive soon so if the car could last us a couple of years I would be happy! Even think I will tackle the rear 147 seats! The whole set just looks too good not to try :S

Ta! And yours is in my favourite colour! :)

There are a few around: but getting rarer -- especially as the gearboxes tend to get ignored (or have the wrong oil put in them...). :(

Good luck...! (y)

If you do, lots and lots of photos and instructions, please! :worship:

I nearly bought the backs for mine -- but couldn't be bothered going through the physical grief I know it will cause me; and I really don't want to pay for someone to do them. However, you may just be the push I need to get them done...!

I love this colour of mine! People laugh but I cannot help but love it.

There is one where i live driving around. It looks to be a very clean example! body is near intact! I parked near it the other day and was a little ashamed.

Parked somewhere in richmond back in may and came back to find another one parked next to me!

If I do I will certainly take plenty of pictures. From what I have read on various forums that you should take the bracket off of the original bottom of the rear seats and weld onto the 147's and you may need to knock the base with a hammer a few times  but need to do some more looking into the back of the rear seats!

If you get stuck, wrightyy -- although I think he's now sold his -- may be your man! His Punto (at Stanford Hall, last year) was the inspiration for me fitting my Alfa seats -- and he made a perfect job of getting the rears in...! :slayer:
