Hi Folks,

has anyone had a problem with the wiper linkage wearing and falling apart, the linkage on the drivers side wiper came adrift on the way home from work, which was not nice on a congested m6 when it's peeing it down, clipping it back in lasted about 3 miles........... It looks like the hole in the wiper linkage arm has worn away. has this happened to anyone else. the whole setup seems a bit mickeymouse-ish, unless there is a bush or similar missing, the wiper arm pivot running in a stamped out linkage made from monkey metal doesnt exactly have longevity stamped on it........... I enjoy driving the car, but things like this really test my patience...................

hi Dave,

cheers for that, ill have a look, ive been an ebayer for quite while before it became popular (ebay id jknstaffs)i find it a real shame that fiat get the basics right, yet spoil it on niggly things...........

take the car to dealership and explain to them, they will change the wiper motor free of charge, as long as u tell them it's not your problem and make a little fuss,

Why not just say 'my wipers are faulty the car is under warranty can you have a look at it' you have more chance of a favourable reply & getting the job done that day.Being sarcastic or making a fuss' will only get a reply like 'sorry parts not in stock come back next week' followed by a dirty look!
Considering the cars not under warranty its £110 for motor & linkage(motor doesn't come seperate)+ labour unless you get a kit like Dave said.

The exact same thing happened to my 2000 Punto Sporting :( Since it was out of warranty I took it to a good local garage, and they said that they see the exact same thing several times a year. Apparently it's a well know fault but Fiat have no interest in fixing it as every time it happens you have to shell out £100+ for a new washer motor unit and linkage. Which is what happened to me.

The garage told me that it's only a matter of time before the same thing will happen again to me, but it should last another few years before it goes again. This is my first Fiat and I've got a feeling that it might be my last! :bang:

(n) found out that mine has the same problem today when I tried to clear the windscreen before setting off to work

Remove the whole wiper assembly, drill a hole( 2.5mm or 3 mm) in the linkage above where the arm connects to the wiper, and put a split pin in after reconnecting the offending part. Apply grease. I did this on a 2000 Punto 12 months ago. I have had no problems since.

I have a 1p fix for this, havn't tried it yet but think it will work.......

As per the earlier post the hole in the linkage has worn ever so slightly by a few thous, and as such "pops off". A simple soloution would seem to be to "pop" it back on and solder or even glue a 1 pence piece on the bottom of where the linkage attaches and grease it back up!

a local engineering firm has made me a ptfe bush, then ive drilled and pinned the rear of the shaft, all is fine now, but what a poor setup fiat...............

well seen your post had a punto about 4 years old and the same thing happened it was raining hard and the drivers side linkage came away from its arm...no warranty so went to scrap yard and got the whole unit for a tenner easy to change 5 mins of your time..mind you it did not help at the roadside..i had to jam a rag on the joint and force it back together it held but had to use inttermitent wipe....fiat cars are ok it just the cheapnes of the parts they fit i have seen better on lesser makes of cars..it is a real put off.

I bought a 2000 punto as my first car about a year ago from my neighbour, generally very pleased with it. My neighbour sold it to me complete with a brand new wiper assembly, saying that there was a fault with the old unit's wiper motor. Fitted the new assembly with help from a haynes manual.... 1 year down the line and the same bit has broken again, this time it's the tubular metal brace that runs between the two points where the wipers attach (I'll call em spindle-mounts). The near side ABS/Resin spindle-mount has sheared off inside the tubular brace (where it attaches), seemingly due to the spindle being very difficult to turn in its mount, if ya catch me drift. Tried epoxying it back together and lubing the spindle with WD40 but it broke again the next time I used the wipers.
If this upgraded linkage kit will sort this recurring problem that mk 2 puntos have with their wipers then it might just be worth the cash.

Just got my car back from the MOT. The chap at the garage is a decent bloke and will sensibly help out where he can, (He quickly gun-gummed a small hole in the exhaust to pass the emmissions -(Lambda) , but wouldn't let a corroded brake pipe go, so no complaints from me as my wife and children use this car much more than me.

Advisory notices:
Nail in R/H/R tyre !
Wear in R/H wiper spindle - I guess this is what you guys are refering to ?
Incorrect locking wheel nut key (17mm not 19mm ) luckily for me instead of putting a 17mm and a 19mm in my alloy wheel lock kit they put two 17mm :bang:

Hi!

The SILENT WIPE system has been designed to replace the whole wiper system on the Fiat Punto Mk 2, because of the many reoccuring problems. (n) A few customers have had Mk2 linkages actually breaking which is why we now manufacture a replacment system as Fiat charge £105.00 :( just for a new linkage! We have upgraded the system for more rigidity and used upgraded materials to try and alliviate all of these problems. Then we have added the two high quality wiper blades, as the better the blade rubber the better the wipe! (y)

We have added this to your forum just so that if anyone does have these problems we can help! As you will see Dave (Sticky) has tried the linkage for us and recomends it. As you are all Forum members we are also offering it to you at a discounted rate. We have them available on ebay at the moment for £89.49 + p+p, but for Forum members we can offer it to you for a discounted rate £78.00 all in.

If you are interested either contact me via email [email protected], check our website www.wipex.co.uk or call us during office hours at Wipex on

We look forward to hearing form you! :)

mine gets replaced under warranty next week, I'm just waiting for the local Fiat place to supply the part to my mechanic.

Not bad for an aftermarket £50 warranty! Already quids in :D

I'll let you know how long it lasts ;)
