i have serious probelms with my punto 1.2 8v 60 bhp overheating, the cooling system froze and i manged to unfreeze it and get coolant all round the engine and the heaters blow hot but only when car is moving, the rad fan doesnt kick in when the temperature is to hot and the temperature just keeps climbimg.
what is the most common problem of this ?

thanks

Could just be air in the system.

have you checked the fan fuse?

Does the fan work with power applied directly?

However, the freezing may have compromised the HG or even cracked the head.

Time for a pressure test

Cheers

If the rad is still frozen the water (it cant be coolant in there) wont circulate and the engine will overheat. Chances are the head gasket has blown and the radiator has been burst. With luck the engine block and head are ok.

Thaw it out, find the leaks (there may be a few) and fill it with proper coolant.

air in the radiator will cause to overheat as the radiator will not get hot enough to turn the fan on. You must have some coolant circulation as the temperature goes down when you are moving. You can check the fan action by disconnecting the radiator switch wiring plug and shorten the circuit at the plug. With the ignition on it should turn the fan on. If you lucky bleeding the radiator and add some anti freeze may save the day.

fan works fine i have it on a switch, to turn it on or off when ever i want i was thinkin about taking the head off to have a look

There is little point in just pulling the head without doing any tests.

Compression tests will show if any cylinders are down on compression. Low PSI wet and dry = head joint. Petrol fumes in the coolant tank = head joint. A pressure test of the cooling system will also give some clues.

Fill the system with water and bleed it properly. Look for leaks radiator is a prime source if its been frozen.

If its still gets too got (dont allow it to overheat) the thermostat and radiator fan are likely causes. When you know its not leaking dump the water add 3 litres of antifreeze and top up with water then you have at least 50% mixture.

i ran the engine today i had no pressure at all in the header tank, but i took the bleed screw out the top of the rad and water jetted out with alot of pressure, does any1 know what this means ?

thanks

Probably normal. You should also be able to get water jetting out of the heater hose air vent. Any spluttering indicates air coming out.

No signs of bubbling from the coolant tank vent pipe and no over pressure in the header tank is good. Overpressure and indicates a head gasket failure.

The coolant tank only gets pressurised after engine has run for a while and its fully hot. I keep mine 20mm above the max line when cold. Its always been ok.

Hopefully the engine and cooling system survived, Its gonna freeze again so make sure its got proper coolant and ALWAYS check the coolant level before and after using the car. If the level is still ok after a week just check it every few days but not less than every week.

the engine is still overheating tho, that fan doesnt kick inb but i have it on a switch and still over heats with the fan running

If the radiator is only getting warm but the engine AND top hose are very hot you can assume the thermostat is opening.

If there is no blowing over into the coolant tank no bubbles in the cylinder head (it bleeds clear from both vents) its likely the water pump failed. If it froze the impeller could have been damaged.

This would also have stressed the cam belt so change the cam belt, tensioner and water pump.

I would also do a cylinder compression test to be sure the head gasket has survived.

radiator water is stoned cold, already had water pump off and its fine still spins and impellor is fine, its bleeds clear from both vents, thermo stat is working had it out and tested, the one thing i havent done is a compression test but the engine starts so quickly, i literally touch the key and it starts so i dont think its loosing compression

The HG can only cause overheating if it leaks gases into the cooling system. The gases in the cooling system then form a air lock and the coolant stops circulating properly causing the overheat. Bleed system again and this means also using the radiator bleeding screw. If the system quickly needs a rebleed then you can assume the HG is causing the air locks.

by the sounds of it the HG has gone because the coolant is circulateing properly because the heaters do not blow hot when engine is idling, and dont get to hot when the car is moving,

thanks
