Hi hope someone can help me.
I have a mk2 punto 1.2 8v which recently failed mot on emissions. The examiner said it was running rich.

Did a mini service, plugs leads, oil, changed lambda sensor however it failed again on emissions although the readings were better.The examiner said he could not hold the revs steady at 2000 rev which could be the problem. Why is it doing this??:bang:i have tried to hold but drops to 1500rev and back to 2000revs again.If you drive the car its great you cant even tell something is wrong with the car.
Looked on previous threads for similar problem but to no avail

Try a search on here mate because I know there's been a lot written to do with our cars not being able to hold a fast idle at MOT time.
Even VOSA got involved apparently and (if i've got this right) MOT stations where emailed with a bulletin explaining what to do if the car couldn't be held at particular revs etc.

I know mines hard to hold at a hight idle but as you say, once you actually drive it she's fine.

As for running rich...not sure on that yet, think I need to re read your post and have a think

Indeed. The problem was the ECU getting confused due to seeing the engine revs high, but without seeing a wheel-speed signal (due to being in neutral).

VOSA's bulletin said (IIRC) to run the test at a higher speed (3000rpm) and under a different test limit, or failing that- raise the front wheels off the ground and run it in-gear (though health and safety might have something to say, lol).
