this might seem like a bit of a stupid question but is the manifold heat shield needed?
im planning on painting some parts of my engine, the manifold being one of them, but thought there would be no point if i can't see it.

thanks.

You dont need the heat shield. Alot of people have taken them off because they rot through and start rattling.

What are you painting your manifold with? even high temp paint will flake off after a short while and will look horrible.

i was gonna use black foliatech for the manifold and blue for some of the engine.
is there any paint you'd suggest that i could use?
would reapplying it every month or 2 work?

I havent heard of anything that work to be honest. High temp paint (even though it says it can be used for manifolds) will work for a day or so then burn off.

Ceramic coating works. But on a standard manifold it will crack at the welds in no time.
