I get a whining noise when I accelerate in 1st and 2nd gear.

Its only during the first few changes after starting the car, so when its cold, and goes away fairly quickly, but it wasnt doing it last week.

Any idea what it is?

Hello mate. It may be worth checking your gearbox oil level. Its dead easy mate..you'll need an Allen key though (think its an 6mm but may be wrong on that).

As your facing the front of the car its on the right hand side of the gearbox (assuming it's a Mk11, not sure on the others i'm afraid) and basically just whip the plug/screw out and top up 'till its runs out.

IF you still have the noise after that then bit more investigation may be required mate :)

Good luck dude.

Cheers mate, I'll have a nosey at it tomorrow and report back.

Can you post an image of the bit so I know exactly where?

It is a Mk1

I have that noise too. Only when engine a little bit warm and between 1700-2300 RPM. Usually goes away before I can popup the hood. Only once I managed to hear it with the hood up and it came from under the timing belt cover. I think is the timing belt tensioner or the water pump...mostly tensioner.

here's how to replace tensioner (I've never tried it)

I went to the mechanic but the Punto gets scared everytime and no more whining; so everything is perfect when I enter the service area.

so I'm waiting to get worse so the mechanic could hear it.

I have this problem aswell but i cant figure out weather its the brakes whining or the other. What i want to know is how can i get this fixed. My Whipp is a(( MK2 8V Punto))

Mine is definitely not the brakes.

I'm going to have a wee look just now.

Can anyone post a picture where the gearbox is in a Mk1 please?

:(
