I have a 1997 fiat punto registered as a 60 S with a 1.2 litre engine

Looking at the pictures in my haynes manual it appears my car actually has a 1.1 litre engine in it. The car has been in an accident prior to me owning it i believe and think it must have had the 1.2 taken out and a 1.1 fitted or something. My garage recently did MOT and service and it says 1.1 litre on the reciept also.

My question is, is the number on top of the engine in the top right corner the engine number? if so then the engine number of my engine doesnt match that of what it says on my V5 document.

Can you get a punto 60 s with a 1.1 litre engine? im asking all this to try and save a bit of money on my tax and insurance as my car is registered as a 1.2 litre engine and its clearly a 1.1 litre so when i check for insurance online it comes up with 1.2 litre and on one sight its saying its a 1.2 16v sporting one and its definately not that.

Mainy just need to confirm that the engine number for a 1997 1.1 litre petrol engine is in the top right corner of the top of the engine.

cheers

mike

Well it says its stamped on the left hand face on the cylinder block and i was reading the number off the top so i will have to see if i can see it on the left hand face.

post and pic and we'll be able to tell you if its 1.1 or 1.2.

if it is a 1.1 then you can get the V5 updated with the DVLA, but it may put your insurance up as it is then technically a modified car (if it really was originally a 1.2) and even a smaller less powerful engine puts your insurance up compared to having a standard car. either way it wont make much difference at all.

Pretty simple this one if its got fiat lancia and the lancia crest above the exhaust manifold molded on block its a 1.1 if not its a 1.2. Me and my mate both owned mk1 punto s his a 60s mine a 55s and its the easiest and fastest way of telling the motors apart as both cars had same airbox, believe 1.2 in haynes is a 75.

Also the tax is flat below 1.5 litres rate so you'll save nowt and the insurance is only 1 group apart 2 and 3 IIRC if not 3-4 so not massive savings to be had also your car wont be factory spec so you might end up paying for it as a mod.
