Hi, I am replacing my 2002 Punto 1.2 8V gearbox. I got 130,000 miles out of the original one, so not bad going.

It is going well ... except that, half way through the job, I noticed that the replacement second-hand gearbox has a blanking plug in the place where the original gearbox has and electrical connection. I assume it is the speed sensor. (The reverse-light connection is there OK, on the top-front, same as the original one).

My question is, can I take the speed sensor out of the original gearbox and somehow put it in the replacement gearbox ?

Also, if this connection is left un-plugged, will it just affect the speedo, or is it also used for Engine Management ?

The replacement gearbox is marked 0.5.10.15

Thanks for any help. John

OK, it works

The speed sensor from the old gearbox fitted OK, it's cog engaged with something inside the new gearbox, and the speedo works fine.

I wonder if Fiat made the later gearboxes quieter ? This car was never as quiet before I replaced the box, and we had it from new.

Also, if you like a feather-light clutch, the Repset clutch that I fitted is beautifully light. It feels like there is just air in the master cylinder, not oil !

All in all, this car drives better than new.
