I have a mk1 punto L reg I had a car stereo for xmas ans hubby fitted it, then the battery was flat next time i went to use it. Have put a brand new battery on today and it wouldnt start it appears to have drained the new battery even though it wouldnt turned over. Does have anyone have any suggestions what to look at please?

I too had to have my battery replaced this week. The first thing the mechanic checked once the new battery was in place was the alternator, just to make sure it was sending enough charge back to the battery...perhaps you could get that checked out?

I'm afraid I don't know much about the subject ... just speaking from experience, but there's not hurt in checking just in case.

Hope you manage to get the problem sorted out! (y)

Hello there!

By the sounds of it, the battery draining issue seems to coincide with the fitting of your new stereo. I would check all the wiring on that, as it could be draining the battery.

I would also do as FIA786 said, and test the alternator. To do this, start the engine, and put a multimeter reading volts on to both terminals of the battery, and see what reading you get. You should get a reading of around 13.6v up to around 15v. Anything lower, and your alternator isnt charging the battery properly.

Hope that helps,
Alan

are you saying that you fitted a new battery and then went to start the car straight away and the battery had drained in a matter of minutes??

if hubby fitted radio where has he wired it into for power source and how has he earthed it? did he use existing radio loom?

thanks, I am not able to start the car it wont start for me to check even using a booster pack.

when turning on ignition are you getting all warning lights or is everything dead?

Most are dead but speedo shot to register 40 interior light dimmed on turn of key.

sounds like youve got a short in the wiring, if youve not already done so ,I would have hubby remove the radio, including any wiring he may have installed and then try and start car.
