i was just wondering if some peeps can help me out here

i have a fiat punto sporting, 16v mk2

recently i had suffered from loss of power so i took it to the garage and they said the valves might be burnt out.
ive got a quote to repair this for £300
thought this was too much so ive decided to do this myself (i know quite a bit about cars and not totally tupid on this matter). can any1 help me out by confirming the problem? out of 10, how hard is the job?

is there any threads that has a step by step of simialr procedures??

thanks peopl i know i got a lot of questions lol

first of all, have you had a compression test done on the cylinders? This will confirm compression leak before you start dismantling the engine.

i cant see a valve 'burning out' but it may be seated badly, in which case its going to be the same process as a head gasket change, except when you send the head to a machinist to be skimmed, have them pressure test the head and re-seat the valves if necessary. From pressure testing, they will be able to confirm if the valves are leaking and which ones they are. If the valves want replacing, then you cant do that bit on your own, but your still going to need a machinist to reseat them properly, skim the head and do the pressure test.

If the pressure test shows no signs of leask, it may be piston rings, which is a PITA.

both jobs arn't exactly easy to be honest, so unless you feel confident about it, id take up the offer of £300 which doesnt seem too bad, provided HG and cambelt changes are carried out in the process. In short summary, the jobs consist of removing the majority of the engine wiring, rmoving inlet and exhaust manifolds, rocker cover, timing belt (and retiming on repair) head, disassembling the head, then the reverse to put it all back together. if it turns out to be piston rings, you need to continue by removing the sump and bearing for the piston, remove the piston from the cylinder and replace piston rings, then put it back together again.

i think i's highly unlikely that the valves are leaking more than they should

fiat engines rarely ever have valve problems or piston ring problems

especially the fire engines

was your power loss sudden or gradual and if so over how much time and how server is it slightly less poke or dire power loss are there any flat spots or is it all through out the rev range

what's the servicing like on your car

most specifically plugs and leads fuel filter what oil you use

does it happen when warm or all the time

how many miles also

sorry for all the questions but having all your valves wear out simply does not happen unless you have been running very sick for a very long time or you've done more than 150k of solid thrashing

normally one valve may get a bad seal and burn out but you would notice this as it would deteriorate very quickly

so i think it's more than likely another problem like lambda probe or old plugs

hi everyone thanks for the reply.

i put the car in the garage and they said the valves are ok it was just the head gasket due to the water pump messing up. now its fixed but the cars still not giving much power its sluggish. he says its the lambda sebsor. could that be true, i reversed it and the car revved up niceley bt wen i drive forward its slow
