Steel Coolant Pipe Leaking

I had my MOT a few weeks ago now and one of the advisories was the steel coolant pipe corroded/leaking, when I set off from stationary I usually hear like a fluid when I rev behind the glovebox and wandering if thatís anything to do with it? Also should I look at getting it replaced soon or if I can, do it myself? Thanks

That sloshing.. classic sign of LOW COOLANT LEVEL.. needs sorting before HeadGasket failure

It connects into the back of waterpump..

So ideally a combined job with a cambelt change..
It is a 4 pot petrol..??

The steel pipe plugs into the coolant pump.

The pump is driven by the cambelt.

IF it is due a cambelt this year.. do it all as one job saving @£100 IN labour charges.

This only applies to 4 cylinder petrol engines..
The 1.3 diesel..and twinair are chain.driven cams.

Ah right okay thank you, just had a look at the coolant level now and itís very low! Just booked it in to my local Halfords for tmrw coolant and antifreeze change, will look at getting the pipe changed up too if possible.

Reckon it could be to do with coolant level being low?

Thanks for info!

No problem..

BUT. The coolant pump is approx 1 hours work..as you need to DRAIN THE COOLANT. AND slacken cambelt.

So IF you paid for new coolant today.. you would be adding to it tomorrow.. due to the leak ..AND.. then replacing it all again in a weeks time.

Just refill to the MAX mark today.
(If temps are staying above ZERO.. just tap water will be ok for a couple of days.. better to have fluid cooling the engine..

A head gasket failure could cost £350..)

And get it booked in for the pipe replacement.

Its your judgment on the cambelt- waterpump.

This is an identical job in the grande..and 90% of petrol FIATS..

Look around for what it has cost people

I see, Iím hoping that the garage will assist with the pipe replacement tmrw however I have checked the condition of the pipe and it is slightly corroded but isnít leaking as much as originally thought.

Hopefully once all is refitted tmrw it might help with considering about water pump and cambelt

Thanks

Re: Steel Coolant Pipe Leaking

I woudlnt bother adding 'sealant'..

As it will also sealup the small holes that make the cars radiator function properly

Did you get a price to change it?

Re: Steel Coolant Pipe Leaking

Hello,

Sorry about late reply, got it repaired same day from a good local garage, could only get the part from vospers and wasnít hopeful to get it same day but only took a few hours, cost me £180 overall which is a bit steep!

It was leaking that bad that when I was driving the pressure was spraying the coolant out whenever I stopped the water was hitting the engine block and creating a lot of steam which turnt a few heads!
