I have a Punto Evo 1.4 with the pump in the boot. I noticed it runs off the cigarette lighter under the handbrake, which is rated and 100+v (i believe). my question is, will any car charger be damaged if i use that?

Hi. I'm trying to understand what you're asking. I'm guessing your car has no spare but a can of "gunk" and a pump in the boot which is used by plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket? Not sure what the 100+v is you mention? Then you ask about possible damage to a car charger. Sorry if I sound thick but can I assume you mean a normal 12volt battery charger? If so then do you mean will the charger be damaged if you try to use the pump whilst the charger is connected to the battery? or are you suggesting that you connect the charger leads directly to the leads of the pump without a battery anywhere in the system?

The pump will need a lot more current than a domestic battery charger can supply and as such the output on the battery charger may "see" a direct connection as a short which may or may not cause damage to the charger depending on how sophisticated the charger is. If you already have the charger connected to the battery and then connect the pump to the battery - via, in your case, the ciggy lighter socket - as the car's manual instructs you, then the charger out put will not greatly affect the ability of the pump to function. it will depend on the level of charge in the battery. I think my best advice would be - Don't! By which I mean use the pump as the manual suggests and if the battery is too flat to work the pump then wait 'till the charger has charged the battery sufficiently, disconnect the charger and then connect the pump.

Hope that's helpful?
regards
Jock

Hi.
The pumps should be within the electrical load capacity of the socket.

IF.. you are concerned about flattening the battery..by using the pump.
Simplest scenario : only pump a tyre once you are almost ready to drive..

Set out the pump near the tyre to be inflated ...extend its flex to within the cars cabin.

Start engine. Let it idle as you plug in the pump..now connected to the tyre valve.

Once the desired tyre pressure is reached

Uncouple the pump from tyre valve.. replace valve dustcap ;)
Unplug the pump.. stow in a safe place.

Continue your journey. :)

There you go. As Mrs Jock says, I'm always looking for the most difficult scenario!

thats 180 Watts, not volts, the socket is still 12volts and therefore any device that is 12 volts will fit and should work, just don't go using anything with a big heating element like a car kettle as that may blow the fuse.

Why are all the cigarette lighter lids on the wrong way in puntos? does it not drive anyone else crazy? [emoji30]

mine is the right way up, I will upload a picture ans prove it at some point assuming i remember lol (y)
