Was driving my courtesy car home tonight and the stop start worked fine until a major junction.

It kept trying to start the car but it wouldn't 'catch', missed a green light much to the annoyance of the cars behind.

Eventually I got it started by giving the throttle a bootful when it tried to start.

Cause?

Cheers

Less than a minute.

It was in the queue at the St James roundabout, the lights change very frequently, letting only 2 or 3 cars out at a time.

It was quite happy to try to turn the starter, tried to start but just wouldn't catch. Because my foot was on the clutch (which actuates the starter sequence) it just kept trying to start, half a rev, cut out, starter actuates, half a rev, cut out etc etc.

I haven't experienced S&S that badly yet on my Evo or atleast not given it a chance to, I've certainly been at lights & clutch down, as they've turned green... just for the engine to try starting but then not & due to stress i just turn it off/on via key.

Also I've had good runs with it, where it takes xx time to start up and i've gotten used to it and adapted my driving to that start up time.... just for it to decide to take longer this time resulting in tits-off revs or wheelspin, or a complete stall.

When it comes to my next car, I'll certainly be taking S&S as a Negative rather than a Positive - S&S is just another variable drivers don't need.

I've had contuinuous problems with the S&S basically it very seldom seems to work. I took it in to the the dealer and the mechanic said he plugged it into the computer and it said it was because I didn't use my seatbelt. Is asked what he meant and he said there was something like 700 recorded journeys with no seat belt used. I stated that I NEVER drive without a seatbelt but he was going by the computer. I am kinda puzzled by this and a bit worried incase there is some seatbelt sensor issue. ANyeone else heard this?

It doesn't mean the number of journeys with the belt released, only that the belt not been plugged in with the engine running and while the S/S is in it's operating 'window'. For example, if you have driven off before clipping the belt in, or release it before switching the engine off.

If the belt isn't clipped-in, the red warning lamp will be on. ;)

I'd rather pay £10-15/year more tax and know my engines going to be there when i need it than risk getting rammed up the backside cause the car stalled at the lights (y)

I quite agree. So many problems reported seem to be down to Stop/Start. If they can't fit something to a car that's actually gonna work then don't bother fitting it at all.

I'd just switch the damn thing off and leave it off.

Well, I've just had my first genuine reason to avoid S&S equipped cars in future.

Stopped car, Neutral, clutch up, Engine stopped *Beeeep* "Start & Stop Unavailable"

Had to turn car on again via ignition.

The engine was warm it had been driven about 25 miles, the day before i did 100mile trip so the battery should of been fully charged, no reason for it to happen.

I hope it was a fluke & not the start of something cause if it makes a habit of that i'll be asking the dealer to set default to Off.

Yip, had that one before… not lately thankfully… could be worse though, I mean it’s not like it’s even remotely embarrassing!

yup, not only embarrassing to yourself for appearing to have stalled to other people but embarrassing when you've got anti-fiat people in the car who your trying to convert, then the car does something like that!

Did not go down well.

So if you switch it off (with a button i presume), does it come back on automatically each time you use the car? You can't just switch it off and it stay off until you decide otherwise?

Unfortunately it’s set to “on” by default, so even though you can switch it “off” via the button on the dash you need to remember and do that every time you start the engine.

Sounds easy enough… but its harder than you’d think!

I have said goodbye to stop start...for now.

One wee experiment I tried.

Sitting in a traffic queue on a hill. Engine stopped, as expected.

Traffic started to move so I let the car roll forward without putting my foot on the clutch to engage the restart. Once the car got up above a slow walking pace the engine restarted.
