Today i started the engine and the engine warning lights came on with a message saying start and stop unavailable and then it said check engine.

Apparently this has been a really big fualt accross the 500's with the system and as usual mines the first in the garage with this problem.

Some sensor which they have no idea which one isn't working ....

Starting to get bored of the constant issues with it, my old Grande wasn't this bad. Still love my car however just to make the point lol

argh >.<

I just got back from the dealer today, i think finally everything is working & no more problems :) ... though, there is a very minor paint defect that irks me every time i clean the car on 1 specific spot, but ive given up caring :p

Luckily ive had no real engine issues yet, my car still judders on rare occasions & im not sure why, every time it happens i try to find out just what is causing it as i hop down the street but a quick dab for 2.5k rpm clears it.

Mine popped up with the same problem a couple of weeks ago(n), took it to the dealership and they had to reset the system, apparently it is something to do with the gears... or so I was told!
Its been ok since though, thankfully.:)

hade same message and warning light come up on first day i got my car worked out it had a faulty throttle body. reason why i it says stop start unavalible apparently is becuase stop start deactivates when there is a issue with the engine so the stop start does not damage it further.

I keep getting the 'Start/Stop Unavailable' message randomly and for no apparent reason too, but I think I have bigger problems than just that issue.

The Start/stop will sometimes come up and say that, even if there isn't really a problem. If you unplug your seatbelt for example, or if you have reversed. But after driving forward again, it will come back.

Not that I let mine do it, as it seems to judder after the start/stop.

I queried the Stop Start error message with the dealer when I dropped my car off today and was told that some people tend to drive with their foot rested on the clutch pedal which can cause it. After saying that I didn't do this, he said they some people have had to have the Stop Start system reset which will fix the random messages appearing.

I have only ever had it after normal driving (never after reversing or with the seatbelt thing, which I know to affect it) so I'm having mine reset while the car is there being looked at.

I had all the lights on the dash for the sidelights and headlights todat while driving along in the sunshine. I checked and they were turned off. Stopped the car and, with them turned off, the sidelights were on and the DRLs were off. Bizarre

Got my car back today and they've adjusted the timing on the Stop/Start system and it seems better for the time being.

I was also informed that the system can often become unavailable if you drop below the quarter of a tank fuel level this afternoon by my dealer.

Hi all, im a newbie but been reading posts for a few weeks as i ordered a punto evo gp 1.4 8v few weeks ago.

i know this isnt directly related to the post but would like help please.

basically i was due to pick my car up yesterday, as i was on my way they told me that there is a fault on my car (engine not running right) and it needs a new gasket and manifold.

im not a mechanic but both of them seem like major parts, i am very worried now that im not going to know if it still broke on pick up and if i will be going back to the dealer every week :(

i dont supose anybody knows of a comon fault (with them two parts on this engine) or wht it could possibly be ?

I had the same problem on my 16v MultiAir after 3000 miles. I made a post about it ... Umm they fixed it and since it's been fine, apart from some minor start stop issues.

My manofold and head gasket were replaced due a defect causing oil to leak somwhere it shouldn't and the engine developed a missfire on cylinder 3 if I remember.

Hope that helps

Thanks, yes that sounds like mine. I suppose at least they spotted it on pdi which has got to be a first for fiat.

Spoke to dealer this afternoon and its sorted and been tested. Hopfully I'll not have to go back until its service :)

Thanks for that though, feel at ease now haha.

P.s anybody buying a fiat STAY AWAY FROM OLDHAM MOTORS FIAT, ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING CUSTOMER SERVICE!

stop and start will become unavalibe for sevral reasons engine fault, battery needs 80%+ charge so if you have radio on with aircon full beams etc all at same time it will not work, also if the engines not up to temprature it will not always work there were also some other reasons we were told on my course but cant quiet remember them. :)
