Mmmmm I checked my old style paper licence (I don't have a fangled new photo one). 9 points in 22 years of driving - All SP30's. 6 points in the last 2 years though. 3 for doing 55 in a 50 zone and 3 for 78 on a motorway

I may be wrong but I thought someone had to be doing at least 10% +2 of the posted speed limit to get a penalty offence?

also i've never seen a speed camera on a motorway unless it's been a variable speed limit section (generally not 70mph and stated at a lower maximum limit)
or there has been roadworks (reduced limits + lots of signs)

I just thought that it was harsh if you got a sp30 for doing 55mph and 78mph if it was a national limit motorway.

The motorways that I use regularly are M4 (has speed cameras), M25 (has speed cameras), M3 (there are a couple of laybys the police like to hide in). They do put cameras on them :(

That is a guideline put out by ACPO. Its not a legal requirement and you could be prosecuted for 31 in a 30.

swear it says in my owners manual that my speedo is only accurate to 10% so surely you could contest them in court??
The rule for speedos is that they may not under read at any speed but an over read of up to 10% is OK.

Speeding is what is called an "offence of strict liability". in other words if you exceed the posted limit you have broken the law. Because speedos are not allowed to under read you should always have good warning of the fact that you are speeding.

Went through an RUC speed trap on the Irish border at 129 mph in the coupe. Middle finger vertical against the mirror. Got reported to the Gards in Eire who visited, laughed, said there was 'insufficient evidence to prosecute'. This was 20 years ago. Lucky the northern BIB didn't shoot.

Nowdays you can get done on either side of the border for reckless lunacy.

None somehow been stopped numerous times in 7 years driving but never for anything nickable, despite going off the top of the speedo in 85 elx more than once on my private motorway. I'm good these days never been that fast in current car and never been pulled in it.

I had 9 points a few years back, a bit worrying when you have a family and mortgage. Back down to zero now by driving within the limits, but it is easy to creep over the limit by accident.

I used to get fed up with the lectures from the condescending types who drove to work and back each day on their stretch of road. And they know exactly where the village "gatso" is potitioned, and the camera van is always on the green on a Tuesday morning :p.

I drive over 1300 miles a week to places i dont know, it is a real nightmare looking out for these things. I have to drive within the limits or else i would be out of a job in no time.
