So here's the plan. Going to take the sump off tomorrow, remove the oil pickup and replace the base seal and then remove and clean the oil pressure relief valve. Followed by an oil pressure test and also a compression test. Just to check

Give the engine's history, you really should remove the big end caps to check the crank and bearing shells. Otherwise, you could go to all the trouble of fitting a new oil pump to find the crank bearings are toast.

Mr Dave!!!! :)

Thanks for the response. I have not given up on the engine transplant. I have a Mito motor coming in January so for now my fiance is cruising in the i10 and ill use this for up and downs.

Took of the big and assembly, surprisingly no damage to white metal, faint scratches on last main but nothing on big ends. I'm truly surprised lol...

Thanks for all your info and being so involved with the replies.

I must say the elearn is making it a blast to work on. The sump was a b#$&? To getToff with the studs in front and that silly 6mm bolt holding the flywheel splash guard in place... Side note: the bolt was used in an Olympic toss event today to show my respects for the bad design ha ha ha

No worries. I've been around for long enough to realise that while a few sanity checks can take some time, they pale into insignificance if you do repair work elsewhere and find (too late) there are hidden problems.

Great news the crank shells are OK.

PS while you mention that nasty little bolt, have a look at removing the alternator on a car with air conditioning. The A/C compressor is right in the way and you'll spend *ages* (1) trying to get the 1/4 drive socket onto the bolt, (2) trying to turn it and (3) not have it fall off every couple of ratchet cranks. Then you find the exhaust pipe has to come off to actually get the alternator out from behind the car. Such a fun job. :(

I can imagine!!!! Thank God I already yanked off the engine mount and intake manifold. It made removing a.c. And alternator a breeze to change the Welsh plugs...

I suspect that Fiat would say you should remove the air-con compressor to get at the alternator, but it's (yet) another example of car designers not considering the issues of maintenance.

Question -

Can you tell if the inlet manifold is removable with the engine in the car? The Alfa TS and the Fiat equivalent could only remove the inlet by removing the engine from the car or at least removing the cylinder head.

I was definitely able to remove the inlet mabifold. I was able to refit mine with the motor in place and the main engine mount removed

Great Thanks.
I'm thinking about fitting a liquid phase LPG system. They inject the fuel as a liquid so no faffing with evaporators and you don't lose power. But the inlet manifold has to be removed to fit the injectors.

No idea what lpg is. I'm going to have to read into that. Are there any gains to installing an lpg?

LPG is liquid petroleum gas (propane). In UK it's about 1/2 the cost of petrol so your fuel costs drop by a similar amount. Liquid phase injection is the latest technology. You get the chilling effect on the inlet air as the fuel evaporates and you don't lose volumetric efficiency like you would with the old gas phase systems.

Holy crap! I'm familiar with lpg gas, I had no idea this could be done!!! Have you done the conversion yet???

The parts cost is higher but the installation is easier (sort of). You have to drill the inlet manifold and correctly fit the injectors.

Tread carefully (1) as not all have the space for the ideal positioning.
Tread carefully (1) because the 100HP ECU might complain. Ask the kit suppliers.

This is pretty awesome.. I definitely want to try this. I have a a little polo that we use for collecting parcels and dropping mail, I want to give it a try. I just need to find a lpg supplier close by

You need a supplier for components and a local supplier for fuel.

You "can" fill from bottled gas but you need special equipment and there might not be the cost savings. You need to do detailed research for your area.
