Hi all! I've been insured with the AA for a while now. Always been good..but..last year I and an Eddie Stobart truck rubbed each other in road works in my late punto...I thought he was letting me in and he rubbed my drivers side rear bumper..:( my own fault I know..25 years plus driving and never an accident and clean license! My renewal has just come in...£291!!! That's £100 more than last year. Anybody know a decent insurance company to try? My punto has paint marks his hgv had none..my current car is a massively powerful 1.1 59 Panda eco:) I feel the increase is a bit steep...

First step is to call them and complain, very likely they'll reduce the renewal premium, though no harm searching about too.

Not sure if it's "your thing" but I always use a cashback site (Quidco or TopCashback) if renewing online (utilities, insurances & Broadband/Mobile).

As I also have three motorbikes I currently use Carole Nash 6-wheel policy, interestingly I had unexpected premium hike this year, got it reduced but still a big jump with no justification.

Insurance prices are very variable depending on your own location and circumstances, and I don't know enough about these to know if the renewal price is good or bad.

In general however, comprehensive insurance for £291 does not sound unreasonable, given that insurance prices have been rising over the last year or so, and your previous £190 or thereabouts sounds to have been a very good deal.

All you can do is shop around to see if there is a better quote, and if you do get a better quote it is worth going back to the AA - a little haggling might reduce what they are asking.

Be wary of some of the comparason websites, as the rates quoted are often cut down to make them look attractive, and might not include everything you would like

For impartial advice try looking at the consumer advice website for Which ? magazine at www.which.co.uk and put "car insurance " in the search box. You can get a trial membership for £1 that will let you see the detailed results (Just remember to cancel the trial membership within 30 days or you will end up with a continuing monthly direct debit)

Similar to you, I'm with the AA. Last quote was extortionately high compared with previous years, so I waited on their courtesy phonecall and then asked how the price had gone up so much as nothing had changed my side. They, within a couple of minutes, had a quote back down to what I would normally pay and I closed the deal. Not a problem. They're usually easy enough to deal with.

Put your details in a few compare sites.

Your job title can affect premiums you can try https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance-job-picker/
Location makes the biggest difference. Change to some of the car crime areas and with a fault accident even with full protected no claims it will jump to over £500. By comparison £291 is a bargain

£291 is a lot if you only paid £191 last year; premiums certainly haven't risen on average by over 50% in the past 12 months!

Sadly this shows the reality of car insurance today; if you have any kind of incident, even one that's not in any way your fault, it'll likely cost you at least £250 in increased premiums over the next three years. (n)

For those paying a significantly higher premium in the first place, the extra cost would be much greater.

So drive defensively out there; if another vehicle collides with yours, it's going to cost you, both in hassle and in cold, hard cash.

I know someone whose son had the misfortune of being involved in a fatal collision on the motorway, and it's cost them hugely in both money and personal trauma. The person who died had chosen to commit suicide by jumping from an unlit footbridge onto a car at night.
