Ok, inspired by the recent MPG marathon, and learning that the winner was a Mazda 2 1.4 Diesel that achieved 84 MPG (was supposed to achieve 65 MPG on the combined cycle) thought i'd have a little go myself last night as the figures were very similar to those of the Panda. I wasn't expecting the result i got but I'm not complaining! If i didn't have to go up a massive hill for two miles, it may have been a bit better (although i did neutralise it down the other side!).

Basically i stuck to 40 MPH / fifth gear all the way home and tried not to brake etc. Easier than i thought i guess and beat my old record of 74 MPG. I may even enter the marathon next year! Just wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience in thier Multijets?

Good work! Was that an average over a tank full or an average over a long/short journey?

Chris

The best I've done was 3.8L/100km (~74.5mpg) by sticking to 80km/h everywhere I possibly (and legally) could and drafting lorries. '08 Multijet with ~11000km on it so far.

It was over a 20 mile journey so the computer may have been slightly optimistic, but still, 20 miles should be enough for it to calculate how much fuel is being used. My Dad tried to beat my record today in his ford focus 1.8 Diesel and managed 78 MPG which is very good for a big car! I also did a acceleration test (before the MPG test) and managed a 0-60 time of 12.7 seconds, think i could have got it down to almost 12 with a few runs, quite impressed with that too, although it's no Ferrari!

You know, a few years back I had a single cylinder 650cc motorcycle that couldn't even get near to that figure. Shows you how amazing modern Diesel technology has become.
By the way, my Panda Cross managed 44mpg driving Carlisle to Sunderland, sticking to speed limits but not being very careful to be economical whilst overtaking, climbing hills, pulling away etc. I'm very pleased with that figure.

Very good, i had 46 MPG (over 340 miles) in the Cross i drove, and i was being as
un-economical as possible! By that i mean 85 MPH on the way home, lots of town driving/off road and overtaking etc so i was pretty impressed with the fuel consumption of the Cross. If that 4x4 mag managed 60 MPG, i'm sure i could get 75 MPG! Talking of which, have we seen any pics of yours yet? i know we're all eager to see them! Maybe do some at weekend?

I think Fiat need to develop a multijet/hybrid engine, if i can get over 80 MPG in a normal multijet, imagine combining this with an electric motor? you'd be talking 120 to 150 MPG maybe?
