If it is anything like the 1.2 it will be 90,000 miles before a change.
My 1.2 is just under 20,000 miles but I decided to check the level and it was just about impossible to get anything on the tip of my finger bending it through the filler plug. Initially I topped it up as I couldn't locate the drain plug. Now it is changed and it was quite dirty looking perhaps due to low level.
I used Comma Fully synthetic GL4 75W-80 and the box is very quiet and has less whine than it had.

I have looked in the handbook for my ta and no mention of changing the gearbox oil.

This a genuine opinion, not a snide remark, but if you have to ask whether the engine and gearbox have the same oil, are you sure you should be contemplating changing the oil in the gearbox?

In this day and age no manufacturer would consider sharing engine and gearbox oil surely. It was never the best of ideas and with today's long service intervals and stringent emissions rules I just can't see the reasoning.

The handbook doesn't specify an oil change, has to be a fill for life specification, I have read somewhere else 90,000 miles. I'm old fashioned so I'd say at 5000 miles then every 50,000 that's me though.

I am not asking is it the same oillllll.Iam saying in the hand book of the TA 85 PETROL their is no mention of servicing or changing the gear box oillll.
Hi Phil, I have loved your web postings for the plug change and air filter. With no manual they have been gold. The gearbox drain is on the opposite side to the engine oil drain and a 8mm hex (allen nut) gets it out ! Most importantly the fill is on the front (parallel line to the front of the car) about 4inches above the base and is a 12mm hex head (allen nut). My little bus only had 1.5ltrs of dirty oil when dropped. Its full (1.65ltrs of penrite 75w-85w now full synthetic Gl-4 plus). Having worked on bikes for years I too had surmised that it was joint oil and have changed motor oil every 7,500 Kays (Oz Kays at that ). Always Penrite oil (Enviro+ 5w - 40w full synthetic.) So gearbox oil changed at 65,000 Aus Kays (not miles kays over there). With no hoist, I jacked the front left up, wheel off and the plastic cover under the car off. Lower back to level and then fill her up. Must have been pretty close to level too as started to run out filler hole at 1.6ltrs so jacked her up a bit higher put the extra 50 ml in for good measure and "Bob's your Uncle". Much quieter and slicker shifts. Its easiest to fill with a a 8mm hose and small funnel. Fiat have even provided a hole in the top where the bonnet closes that a funnel with said 8mm hose sits nicely in while you fill her up ! Which is good as they sure as hell don't supply any helpful information like a manual for us to use ! Take Care Boris
