Technical Windscreen Replacement!

Hadn't seen this until now (and didn't realize your mum's Panda was called Pippin, too...!) -- but am glad it's getting sorted.... (y)

I once had to have the driver's side window replaced on my Isuzu. Because it was an import, and with a weird tint, had to be ordered from Japan... -- so I feel for you....

homeward Thanks. Yes its had several name changes, but I think Pippin has stuck. I suppose it should be Pippin Jnr really (y) One of the name changes was after I said yours was also called Pippin (Mum hadn't realised), but I don't think there's anything in the rules to say they can't have the same name!

Hi Palio

I was driving very slowly this morning after pulling out from a junction and a van went the other way (again not fast) and kicked up something which hit my windscreen right in the centre at the base (it wasn't even a particularly loud bang) but it has caused a localised chip with cracking coming away from it.

Gutted as I've had things hit previous car windscreens much worse than this and just had a tiny mark.

I do worry this heated screen is really weak :-(

Hopefully getting it repaired on Friday morning.

Phil

It'll be no weaker than any other screen. Also if cracked I'd be surprised if they can repair it, but fingers crossed.

Palio, did you ever get sorted?

Philboo, if it's cracked I'd say they won't repair it and new screen will be required unfortunately.

Sorry to heard yours has broken too Phil. (n)

Ok update time at last! :spin:

The car was booked in again last week, correct glass arrived, and..... Then Autoglass phoned on the morning to say the fitter was ill & no one could fit it that day!

"Discussion" with the customer service lady who was very disappointed (nee furious) but couldn't find anyone to do it..... :bang:

Re-re-re-rebooked and was finally fitted successfully Friday! :woot:

Spoke to the very helpful & extremely apologetic customer service/complaints lady today, and she has offered a refund of the £75 excess I paid.

I wasn't out to be a pain (and this was offered before I said that's what I wanted), so this seems fair to me. As I give points to how a complaint is dealt with (everyone has off weeks/months and makes mistakes), the customer service dept gets full marks. Nothing personal but I don't want to have to sort out a windscreen again soon though. (y)

I'm pleased they actually managed to get the screen and fit it. I was concerned when I spec'do the heated screen and CBC I may regret it if the windscreen was damaged.

Mine was repaired very neatly and there are two tiny marks on the outside where what even it was hit the screen. It was the same guy that did my abarth 500 repair and he has been doing it for 26 years so has plenty experience.

As he said, any issues, they'll replace it.

Good news for us both at last.

Hi Palio.

Just wanted to let you know that due to your efforts I think auto glass are on the ball now for the panda 4x4 heated screen with CBC option.

My chip repair had gone worse (I think frost and using the heated screen have made the small cracks more obvious). So I've been to autoglass and they are hopefully getting the screen on for me. Apparently they've two in stock at the stores with the heated and CBC option (I genuinely put this down to your replacement). I'll then book it in to swap. Hope they do a good job.

Fingers crossed for you Phil (y)

Yes I know Fiat had to bring one over from Italy (they won't have shipped just one - then again, knowing Fiat..... ), so it would make sense for Autoglass to take a few into stock. :)

Hi Palio

Well the replacement screen was fitted today so I hope this lasts longer than the last without damage. I was surprised at all the pre-fitted CBC and heating wiring having never had a new screen on a car since about 1992.

Really interesting thread and glad all worked out well for everyone.

But this prompts me that maybe I need to tell my insurers my TA has the heated screen because it’s an option, not standard.

Does anyone have claims experience with insurers about factory fit options like this not being covered if they’re not disclosed? A quick google shows some require it, some don’t

My insurer is LV= (equals what?!) so maybe I should give ‘em a call…

Recently had a windscreen replaced by Autoglass on behalf of LV. Never phoned LV, just Autoglass and insisted on OEM glass. Took longer to source but LV accepted the OEM glass. This was for a Volvo not the Panda but it might depend on the age of the vehicle.

The laser's for the city brake control. It's an anti collision thing for around town mainly. At (I think) under 30mph it will apply the brakes if it sees that you are about to drive into something. Very clever & works well apparently, but like the airbags you hope you don't need to test it! The laser shoots from the top of the screen over the bonnet (y)
Hi I had to get my screen replaced it’s just heated went to national windscreen sorted with in a week

Well I withdraw my earlier withdrawal!!! :bang:

I knew it would be far from simple :bang:

Went over to Autoglass today with my Mum as the weather's been too bad for a home replacement. First thing the fitter said was it's got a laser, we've got the wrong glass!! I then pointed out that they'd also not got a heated screen, so zero out of ten for accuracy.....

A call by Autoglass to Thames Fiat had my head in my hands. They denied that Fiat made glass with that spec - a second call had them saying the Panda never had a heated screen  The manager actually rang them a 3rd time after asking if we'd mind if he checked personally that it was heated (what is wrong with Thames Slough? Perry's in Aylesbury certainly know that Pandas have heated screens and CBC!).

The upshot is a formal complaint to Autoglass, a big (n) to Thames (who I thought were better than that), and a blinding revelation that the glass has to be ordered from Italy. They should have asked me 2 weeks ago - the first thing I said was there won't be any in the UK.

Fiat are saying it will be with Autoglass by Wednesday next week, which is quite good going, so a tentative (y) to Fiat themselves (who need to train their dealers a bit better).

Rant over - I'll keep you posted!

Btw if anyone needs a new screen that isn't heated or lasered, there's one spare in Wycombe.
Not the first bad comment Ive heard about Thames. They clearly ont know much about Fiat ans should be repited to Fiat for some retraining...

I’ve never come across a requirement to list original spec from an insurer. Modifications yes (including things like stripes!) but not factory options. Apart from anything else, would you know which of the many options we put on my Mum’s 2013 Panda 4x4 if we sold it to you? (It’s not for sale, but just making a point - I can’t remember now - CBC, leather steering wheel, leather gearstick, side airbags, reversing sensors, height adjustable seat, met paint, and a space saver I think, plus private plate…. 😂 , ).

If you’re worried, by all means tell them, but I don’t see it’s relevant. The only restriction I’ve ever seen is a limit to audio equipment cover on a policy.

I genuinely don’t see how future owners could be expected to know what’s was on an Antarctica, compared to a normal 4x4 , compared to a Lounge for example, so it would be entirely unreasonable to say it had to be declared.
