General Bart's trekking 1200 fire.

Last saturday, because the weather was nice and there was 6+ celsius I have swaped just for fun to summer 185/60-14 alloys, but winter is trolling:p Today there is again 30cm of snow:) , but panda on summer tyres with 4mm tread is valiantly fighting for some grip and it is possible to drive through the snow, cornering is "specific" though:p

For about two months I've been struggling with seized front brakes, It was that bad, that driving was unpleasant , and fuel comsumption rised from about 10 to +14 liters of LPG per 100 km. I've decided to replace calipers with reconditioned ones. What I have found was a total mess, purple-violet burnt discs, crushed pads{both from heat} and TOTALLY wrecked pistons. I do not know who and why smashed the pistons and calipers with 2kg hammer, but I am sure he was an idiot..... damn, and I drove the car for one and a half year with "that" brakes... After buying panda I only replaced discs and pads, didn't bother to just look at the calipers, car was braking good... hmmmm. Fortunatelly disc are straight, new TRW pads and reconditioned calipers are working fine now.

reconditioned calipers:

I'm shocked...never seen a 4wd.
...me neither, only in catalogue.

The car is very very very exploited.Mileage is 180000 + miles .Badly damaged interior, almost every part of trimm, interior etc unique for the 4WD edition is damaged/missing.
Engine runs suprisingly good.Sills are made of swiss cheese, the rest of the bodywork is average good. Front suspension is a mess, but most important for me the gearbox propshaft and rear axle are good!
It isn't to worn out to be restored, but I have bought it as a source os spares. The total cost of the car { car plus fuel to get back home 190 miles, plus bus ticket to get there } was about 225 GBP.

It has a bit longer diff ratio of 5.21:1 I think, panda 4x4 has 5.45:1. It has real soundproffing, not like panda:) so the ride is quiet and due to softer springs comfortable. 4WD engaging mechanism is more advanced {electro-pneumatic}but prone to damage in my opinion and can be modified to be engaged manually.. Nice feature is the rear axle with split shafts,.Without 4wd engaged , the propshaft , shafts and rear differencial are stopped, lower noise, fuel consumption, and most important for me is ,that you can weld solid the satelites making it 100% locked diff, and it will not spoil the tarmac ride since the diff is not working at all when 2WD.

That is pretty slick. Remote free wheel hubs and a diff lock. I'm impressed.

Shame you're not restoring it. I wouldn't be surprised if there were none of them left operational anywhere.

Well..... I have 5 other fiats to feed:) heh...they eat a lot, especially 130 coupe.

I am sure there are still some good y10 4WD 1 series, not like my junky one.I think most of them were sold around Alps area, so mountainous Italy, Austria,Switzerland etc....must be full of it. I have a data that says that 11200 of y10 1.0 carb.4WD were made.{both Lancia and Autobianchi}

Is the y10 floor plan the same as the panda?

Would it be possible to have an electronic Panda 4x4?
Floor plan is the same, but front susp. {shock absorbers} is different. Yes, it is possible to adapt all electro-pneumatic features vacum tank and pipes etc from y10 to panda, and have CLACK :p button for 4WD instead of the pull-handle.

that rear axle! i am quite shocked by that! you do not know how much i want that kinda thing.. well up to a budget of £130. lmao that is all i have at the moment
(panda camp funds)

ya know, i was looking at how hard it would be to swap the rear axle to the one from off say the SJ or Jimny.. not as hard as it looks imo.
wish i could get hold of another rusty 4x4 hehe

One week before buying bianchi 4wd I have visited a small junkyard nearby and found some parts from y10 LX edition on a pile of junk , only the steering wheel was in good condition though. I have bought it and installed, because previous owner of my trekking , for reasons I don't know swapped the steering wheel from nice 4 spoke panda to fiat 126p elx one { final edition from late 90's}which I find ugly as hell :) Now I have plenty of y10 steering wheels<lol> but probably I'll stay with the y10 LX one.
